Time to look forward. Any more post mortems can go in the 2017 thread.

Personally, I think this off-season will determine whether we will be a team with legitimate aspirations or we go into a long rebuild mode.

Shapeero has told the players and Atkins has told the fans that the Jays intend to "go for it" next year. IMO, it all depends on their definition of "going for it". If it means stocking up on a few below market, mid level free agents and hoping a few of them stick to the wall and hoping our prospects to mature rapidly and hoping the pitching can rebound and Smoak repeats, without making at least one major signing then I think we, the fans will be dealing with some hurt for a while.

If Shapeero spends the way a big market team should spend, and make some big moves so that the prospects can make some improvement without placing too much pressure on them, we could stay in contention for a number of years. Is his goal to field a decent/.500 team on the cheap for the dual purpose of maintaining fan interest while saving money for his bosses or is it to prove to the fans that he is sincere about fielding a winner sooner rather than later?

I think this qualifies for the 2018 thread:
The Blue Jays terminated 23 staff today, including the assistant trainer, strength coach, 3 public relations people, among the group.

but the manager and coaches are not held accountable?
Let's see, two American League Finals appearances in 3 years, this past season (2017) the club lost over 1,400 man-games to injury.
Some in the game have indicated John Gibbons & his coaching staff did their best work this season.

Sounds like a rebuild of the infrastructure.

I can get on board with the idea.

Unless Jays make some amazing trades this winter, there are so many current pieces that have to come together next year, that I dont think we'll do it.

The smarter move is to rebuild for next year or two

Agree that he has to make some bold moves if he is serious. Otherwise they would just be treading (not trading) water.

Be patience. We will get some sort of ideas which directions the club takes by next Feb.
Jays can have Price and John Farrell back if they wanted. LOL

The Jays took advantage of 2 down years between the Yankees and sox. Yankees are in the early stages of a 4 or 5 year run after they sign harper and/or machado in 2018. Sox are deep with quality youth as well. Sorry Jays fans, window is closed.

Tulo, Pearce, Gibbons, Morales for Price, 20 mil per season for 6 season and Farrell. That should make a few happy.
Does anyone want to see Farrell return? I know I don't!
Price is being paid a lot of money for a long time. if he can no longer be effective as a starter let the Red Sox pay him.
As for Tulo....... think the Jays are stuck with his salary. Maybe he plays against lefties and Goins goes against right handers. That ought to be good for Tulo's ego.

The 20mil/season was to offset the Price salary to about 10-12 mil. farrell is no longer available to trade since his ass was kicked to the curb already. P.S. The trade was never fair - why would boston want Tulo or Gibbons or Morales. There are a lot bitching about Gibbons, Tulo and others. Sometimes you have to deal with the hand your dealt.

Your totally under estimating the competitive balance between players in the league. The Jays have a few wholes to fix, but you be surprised what a difference that can make. Like any team, you also need a bit of luck. Sanchez needs to not only be healthy next year, but pitched the way he did 16', same goes for Travis. Tulo needs to also have a healthy bounce back year. If Teoscar Hernandez does over a full season what he did in his September call up, this team his just a competitive as Yanks and Red Sox.

Not to mention, this city is becoming a baseball market again, you will start to see the Jays throw a bit of money around, and don't be so sure Yankees are going to sign Harper or Machado. New Yankee front office is not like Steinbrenner, they care much more about the bottom line. If fact, there is a correction coming in the market place which we are already starting to see. More and more teams are trying to stay away from giving big money to anyone over the age of 36. Luckily for Machado and Harper, they're both so young that teams can sign them for 8-10 years knowing that they'll still be relatively young at the back end of their contracts.

Disappointing news.

Watching a young team grow is more interesting than watching a pretender, and, as the Yanks just proved, rebuilding can happen fast.

Trade all vets and FAs then see what we got then fill in gaps with FAs for next year.

Of course there is no guarantee a prospect will work out that is why you get so many for a quality player

Fans would understand .

Also, get players with some personality and flair. Eg Edwing. Play some rock music when ace reliever comes out wearing a leather jacket with spikes on it. Speed is fun to watch so get a designated runner. Some world class runner on the Olympic team and see if they can learn the art of the steal. Get a manager that kicks dirt on the umpire. The first female player. If a female can hit a softball they can hit a fastball. Ever watch a game? Those softballs go fast and curve and pitcher stands closer.
