Yesterday on the fan 590, Atkins and Shapiro were on the right after one another. They were both asked the same question regarding the Jays future. One says they still "want to be competitive" and the other says "a soft re-set is a consideration"...lol.
Did I read this right that Shapiro was, indirectly, blamed the fans for not having a rebuild to take place last season? Like, a year early in his opinion? Shapiro is low if he is looking for others to blame on how he likes to construct the on field Jays!

Soft reset?

They want to rebuild but can’t due to the fans. This was obvious when Shapiro arrived based on what he did in Cleveland. I can’t blame him. There are contracts that he inherited that are really deterimental and it appears that the front office believes the fans won’t tolerate a rebuild.

I tend to concur but I think they are afraid of alienating the casual fan base. The die hard fans will still come as long as we have strong players to cheer for.

Donaldson can go for good futures and I am more than happy to wait a year and a bit for Bichette and Vladdy to come up with our pitching staff.

How else can we really compete with a half retool job against the evil Yanks and dirty Red Sox?

Yeah I totally agree. I've always said, no matter how bad or what your think of these two, you can't really judge a GM until about 5 years.

Vlad Jr is untouchable, Bichette they apparently are willing to trade.

St. Louis is said to have a hard on for Donaldson.

I prefer the strategy of the Leafs, even if it's not guaranteed. Set it up so all your pieces mature at the right time. It's like playing Starcraft. You need your pieces to be ready right when you want to attack.

The Leafs will enter prime territory within the next 3 - 4 years.

The Jays have both sides. Old players that are too expensive and really great young players. That's too polar. You need great and good players within the first 6 - 7 years and a few veterans. I know this is easier said that done, but I'm not sure a soft reset is what they should do.

I really feel that Shapiro may be pressured into doing this because he did tear up Cleveland and made a proper rebuild and they've been reaping for a few years.

Still, with that said, a healthy Sanchez, Tulo, Travis etc... looks like we can compete. It's hard because it's on paper and sometimes the difference is so small, especially in the playoffs.

Well this is the problem. Never mind a healthy Tulo and Travis, Sanchez and Donaldson alone being healthy puts this team in the play offs last year. That's why baseball rebuilds are quite different than other sports. So many factors and always so many surprises. Players having break out seasons out of nowhere. Baseball draft picks are completely different than hockey and basketball. Generally speaking, in baseball or hockey, if you get high draft picks, more often than not they pan out. In baseball, many times guys picked in the top 10, 9 don't become anything, but some guy picked 500th overall ends up being a star. Jeff Blair from the fan 590 make a great point on the radio yesterday, ask Philadelphia and Atlanta how their rebuilds are going...lol.

Doesn't matter how you'd like to dissect the current situations the Jays are in. By April, they need to assemble a team to challenge for the...2nd wild card! Baseball is a humble game. What you did in previous years may not repeat the following year. I would not surprise if Judge regressed with the Yanks next season, for example.

That's a tough one brother, but I think I would bite on that due to the fact I like Ozuna's age, and a pretty team friendly contract
I was thinking that too.

Plus you dont know if Vlad/Bichette are gonna pan out or not. Vlad Jr. might be an awesome minor league'r, but then when he gets to majors he might totally flop. I'm not saying he will (he probably won't), but you just never know.

I would go ahead and make that trade because with Ozuna you are getting a proven player
(plus like you said he's a young guy)

Ozuna has 2 seasons left of arb-eligibility then he’s a free agent after the 2019 season.
He only broke out this year after a couple mediocre seasons.

I’m all for trading prospects too but Vlad Jr is a generational talent. Jays haven’t had a hitting prospect this good since Carlos Delgado. The way he’s progressed it wouldn’t surprise me if he got called up in 2018.

Ya be it depends on when you trying to win. Are you trying to win now or in 4 or years?

People are forgetting this team on paper is a lot better than how it played last year. A healthy JD, Sanchez, Travis and Tulo, with the addition of two good players like Jake Arrieta and Ozuna, this team is very good. (and I don't care what people say about Tulo, he still one of the premier SS's in the league and perfectly capable of having a bounce back season).

I think this might be the reason Shatkins are kind of being idle because they're still unsure of what they got, any you only to need to be a 500 team by mid season to see if your buyer or seller.

Having that said, I do have concerns with Shapiro in this regard as I read that he "scolded" AA for trading prospects at the deadline in 2015 which is one of the reason AA declined his contract offer.

The issue I have with Shapiro/Atkins is these two guys keep talking about how they couldn't do a rebuild because of fan ticket sales and board putting pressing on them to keep competitive. This team had this whole country supporting them. Had they spent money, it would have translated into money because people would still be filling the stadium and viewership will still be sky high.

That's the risk you take when you make a trade. I guess question would be, can you get even more for Vlad Jr?

Trade Vlad or Bichette? There had better be something awesome coming this way if you do! Don't see it happening and don't want it to happen. As long as they continue to produce at a high level as they move up through the system they should be all but untouchable!
