Tulo is aging and hasn't played well since coming here in 2015. Devon isn't showing the promise of his rookie season. And Josh - who knows? Who knows if they will even make him an offer. Probably not, as they could then turn around and compete for his services around the $10 million mark. And all of Josh's 2015 stablemates are long gone. Gibby is probably gone at the end of the year as well.

I would like to see some more development of Gurriel, Hernandez and Grichuk That's probably the way of the future.

Tulo is aging but he's not at the age where he can't have a good year, and Travis has started to hit much better again.

Not sure I agree with you. Once that injury bug hits the way it has hit him, it can be difficult to shake.
Gotta come back and stick by my point. He has always been durable, save the last season and a half, which I do not think is an indication of his body being broken down.

Two words: Gary Roberts.

Dude, he's 32...lol. He's got a guaranteed two years left on his contract for 34 million. He's coming back.
as I understand the contract it is 2019 $20,000,000.00
2020 $14,000,000.00
2021 $15,000,000.00* $4,000,000.00 Buy out!
38 million guaranteed he is coming back, even if it is 2 years on the DL followed by the buy out.

Big Gary Roberts fan but that was different time different sport and a lot different financial reward! Roberts was the team leader when he was a Leaf!

I would love to see Donaldson return to form, and I mentioned in my post what I thought may be possible if showed he could hit and play some. IMO the MVP days are behind him, just don't want to see him here as a journeyman, he still has to be able to perform at an above average level. I don't think he would accept being paid as one either.

We are both entitled to our opinions and in reality , they are not completely different.

Obviously, our views on whether he can return to full health or not are pure speculation.

I think hockey would be a harder sport for a player to return from injury. Also more baseball players can play at a high level well into their 30's compared to hockey. I believe JD, if not MVP calibre, can still be an impact player.

maybe this is crazy ---- but Tulo may not really need the money and he does the right thing and retires

"Does the right thing"???

What fantasy world are you living in?? Right thing for who? He a 32 year old athlete that believes he's got lots left in the tank that loves to play the game and gets a lot of money to do it. For him, the right thing is to come back and play. Anyone in his shoes would do the same thing.

yes that's his contract. 38 million guaranteed. If he can stay healthy and show some of what he had a few years ago, slim chance but the option could get picked up on him. I don't know why so many people have given up on him. I wouldn't bank oh him.... but Sooooo many players at his age have had a few injury plagued years and come back.

Russel Mart had 3 years of batting .237, .211, .226, then batted .290.

The next year only batted .240 but had a career high in home runs.

That just one example and I that's just me thinking of the current Blue Jays roster, never mind other teams and all previous years.

Paul Molitor, from '84-'87 averaged only 92 games a year, including just 13 one year. And only 105 a few years later. After that he hit well over .300 in 6 of the next 7 years.

Shack I would love to see him return to something that resembled his MVP year.
If you were the NEW GM of the Jays would you offer him 17.4 million and, if so, for how long? If you were the GM of any other MLB team how much would you offer him and for how long?

If I was the GM no qualifying offer. Would not offer a long term contract, one year wit a team option(s) and tops 10 million, probably less. I would actually want to give him an incentive laden contract, based on games played and performance! We all know how anxious players are to sign those!

17 is a lot of millions with this past year. But it is also a unique situation. Here is a guy who should have been one of the top free agents in a year of great FAs, but as we've discussed above, he may not even get any offers. If one believes that, then don't tender and see if you get him at a bargain since no one else wants him. However, as I mentioned above, I believe he can return to impact form and be a clubhouse leader (based on his past achievements, work ethic and playing the game the right way, not how great he may or may not be now. He is respected in the profession by all). As such, even though it is somewhat of a gamble, more an uncertainty, if he does perform moderately well (.260/25 HR/85 RBI) he is worth the chance IMO. As well, I have no doubt he will know how to take better care of his body. He may lose some on defense by protecting himself better, but if they move him to first, the demands are not as great.

By tendering, I also believe they retain some rights and still have a chance to use him as trade bait. It may not be a lot, but right now they may get nothing at all. The guy was a stud. One bad stretch of injuries should not mean that he is toast. I believe that there is enough upside potential to take a shot. Dump that slow ooze Morales ($12M?) and use it on JD. I also believe some other teams will see him as a worthy gamble and he will get more than $10M.

Smoak is actually having a decent season considering what we pay him.
He's on course to hitting about 21 or 22 homeruns and driving in 80 or so ribbies.
All that for $8.5 mill/yr isnt too bad at all
