The excitement and optimism are overflowing in Leaf Nation so I guess I'll take the honour to start the new season thread. It appears that the starting lineup will look something like the following :

Goal : Andersen, McIlhinney

Defence : Gardiner / Zaitsev
Reilly. / Hainsey
Carrick . / Borgman
Marincin

Forwards : Hyman. Matthews. Nylander
Marner. Bozak. JVR
Marleau. Kadri. Komarov
Martin. Moore. Brown
Fehr. Leivo

This is pretty much what I had expected with the exception of Marincin over Rosen. I'm also interested to see how you guys would rank the Canadian teams in terms of how they'll finish this season. My ranking as follows :

1) Edmonton
2) Winnipeg
3) Toronto
4) Montreal
5) Calgary
6) Ottawa
7) Vancouver

Montreal has Price and Ottawa has Karlsson, either player has the ability to carry their team single handedly but both players seem to have nagging injuries to hinder their performance. Winnipeg has the best balance on defense/offence talent but coaching and goaltending are suspect. The Leafs can put out the best 3 line offence but the defence has to prove that it can compete.

Eichel just signed a 8 year 80M deal. The Leafs' budget for resigning Matthews will probably have to be expanded a bit.

I don't usually make predictions but I say that Matthews will get off to a slower start than last year.

You mean, it'll take until the 3rd period for his 1st hat trick of the season? :whoo:

You're probably right, or another record will be broken. Babcock says Matthews is a better player than last year though.

Now that they have a good team, no one likes the Leafs. I have to admit, it's a bit disconcerting.

The Leafs threads are a lot quieter without the bashes and haters.

Andersen was the saviour early and the Leafs cashed in on most of their chances. Borgman did well for his first NHL game and Marleau had 2 goals in his Leaf debut. Kadri, Bozak and JVR all had multiple point night. A quiet night for Matthews, only 1 goal & 2 assists. ho-hum.

Hockey in General just isn't the same game it used to be. I'm excited about the Leafs and will be more much into than I have in recent years, but it will never be like it was in the early 90's. Like when the Leafs had that epic battle against Detroit, then beat St.Louis and finally another epic battle with LA, those were the days. Even the year they had that crazy play off series against the Islanders was amazing. This was the series where Tucker knocked Mike Peca out of the play offs. (who coincidently, I fought in Jr. Hockey :beguiled:) The little fucker Steve Webb was running around being a super pest, we got the last laugh.

I feel exactly the same, and agree about what I felt the best Leaf days were.
Obviously people best memories will change based on ages, but seems you and I will love the early 90s the most :)
But good optimism is thinking the best Leaf memories, are still to come.
Still no love for Mats Sundin.

The early 90's Leafs are sentimental favorites but were spent forces by the time they got to the semi-finals. Not so the 2001 Leafs. Sundin demolished the Senators, in 4, almost on his own and the Leafs could have beaten the Devils - had Domi not lost his head. Sundin carried the Leafs through perhaps the worst mismanagement since the Ballard daze. So again why no love?

I can't stand Doug McLean. He turned the Columbus Blue Jackets brown, why is he considered a hockey a hockey expert? On a brighter note, I'm looking forward to seeing Auston's mum again. As Mr. Spock would say; she is most charming.

106 points - 49 wins and 8 overtime/shootout losses

Offence rated second or third and defense rated middle of the pack (15 to 17th).

But no goals. Trade the bum
He scored .... We lost the home opener last year and won by 5 this year but both games we played equally good . Anderson was the key to last nights win and was was key to last year's loss ... Let's hope he stays healthy cause no confidence in any back stop they have.

It's amazing what having a real team (and young and exciting and improving) can do to revive interest in this city. We've been dying here. We deserve a good team.

My son and I turned to watch Double Jeopardy when it was 0-0. When we turned back at the commercial it was 3-0. WTF!

Brendan Shanahan has not only brought in Babcock but a whole management team that has made this Leaf team respectable on and off the ice and not the butt of everyone's jokes ... They make you proud to be a Leaf fan ... You don't hear the word Richard Peddie or the Board anymore ... You just hear about Lou and Badcook ... Heck you don't even hear Shanny mentioned ...
