So I've been watching the new Star Trek.

The verdict is still out, but it looks like they are changing the whole canon of Trek yet again.

But now most of all, the Klingons are now version 3.

Version 1 were just guys with black face and silvery boy scout uniforms.

Version 2 premiered with the first star Trek movie with the whole armoured head and dragon teeth lok.

Version 3, well, we're back to black face and a very different look altogether again.

Is nothing sacred?

I just wonder why these studios have to make shows that are poltically correct and promote modern day values - why not just make a fucking show that is entertaining? After all it is a goddamn business...

Entertainment has always been at the forefront of pushing progressive values. I agree, sometimes it's heavy-handed and annoying. Other times it's fine. Sometimes the entertainment itself is fine, but the surrounding BS is annoying.

For example, I'm obviously fine with an Asian captain and black first officer. But how many articles has there been exclaiming at the greatness of that? Way to relegate those people to their skin colour! It's neither great, nor terrible. It just is. How can we move on when the media focuses on those artificial divisions?

It is weird. On one hand, people are supposed to all be equal and treat everyone with equality.

Yet, OMG! For the first time in history there is..... a Black astronaut. Wow, so Mr. Jackson and all other Black people, how does it feel to be the first Black man on the moon? Does it feel good? Also, we would like to make this a national holiday.

So in other words, treat the guy like a moron who got lucky he got into space, instead of just quietly respecting the guy for earning his place among the other astronauts.

Late breaking news everyone! We would like to report that a Korean lady has for the first time tied her shoelace! We would like to congratulate her for a job well done. We've even made a golden shoelace award for her to take home!

Haven't you been paying attention? In TNG they alluded to some embarrassing disease the Klingons had suffered from that made them look more human in the original series. Maybe the new show has them in the early part of the disease.

Either that or the artistic consultants wanted to do something different to make their mark.

But yes, it requires suspension of disbelief to deal with a ship with technology decades ahead of the original show which takes place a decade later.

That is part of Start Trek's "canon". Woman 1st officer on the pilot. Female bridge officer. Multicultural staff. First interracial kiss on TV. All sorts of morals - I like the guys with the half black/half white who were at war over which side of the face was which.

And that was just in the 60's.

I'm not a Star Trek fan really, although I did love Wrath of Khan with Ricardo M.

I had to Google to see what this new Klingon thing was about..... they basically look like mean Black guys with some armoured/scaly forehead.

I think it looks cool. Much grittier than the old Klingon look.

GTA & Thereabouts...
In the movies, Kirk & Co., fought off aliens using a Beastie Boys soundtrack... As such, they had no choice but to reboot the franchise to get rid of the lameness.

All in all, I thought it was a pretty good first show.

Getting back to the Klingon thing, I thought ST:NG dealt with the changing Klingon appearance thing... Worf growled: "I don't want to talk about it!".

I haven't seen it and probably won't, but if it follows the trend of the past 10-15 years of super hero and space movies, I like darker grittier shows.

Looking back, all the Star Treks, Batman movies and such were pure cheese. I've seen those old Shatner tv shows and movies, and wow. It's basically a comedy show half the time even if they didn't mean it that way.

I thought I read somewhere that members of different Klingon Houses look different from one another as part of series canon. So as we go back and forth in time between different series' and the films and meeting loosely connected groups of Klingons, their looks will change because of isolation plus natural and unnatural evolution.

No doubt that different costume and make-up teams would want to put their signature on each new project as-all. I know they lost a lot of the prosthetics and parts of the costumes between the first film and Search for Spock.

Redesign is a well-established tradition at this point, as ship, set, costume and makeup designs always reflect (our) contemporary style-preferences, regardless of where they fit within the series timeline.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

I tried to watch it yesterday.
Lasted 20 minutes & just could not take the lame dialogue, which was 19 min. too long.

Lots of anal retention on this thread. IMHO change is constant.

I missed the first episode - bummer. I wanted to find out what Jason Isaacs role would be. When I heard he was coming aboard, I was exited. A far better choice as Captain than the bland Chris Pine. He has the flamboyance of The Great Shat with the acting prowess of Patrick Stewart.

Diversity on TV is awesome if done intelligently, but too much back patting yourself for it makes it feel more like tokenism, and that is when it becomes a thing.

I blame Byrian Fuller for this, he should have let's the two characters speak for themselves instead spending so much time virtue signalling.

So far I don't know what to make of the characters, Yeoh seems okay, but Burnham bounces weirdly from acting like a Vulcan to acting like Tom Paris x12. The actresses acting is find, but so far it's hard not to dislike Burnham, who acts like a tool.

We really should have had a chance to get to know the regular Burnham first, before she dealt with the circumstances that made her act like she does.

Still I'm going to give it more time.

Just not liking the look.

In TNG and DS9 and even TOS, the Klingons were not so over the top alien as they have now been made.

The Klingon looks keeps changing because makeup artistry keeps advancing. Having them look like the originals would look very out of place with the more modern look of the rest of the show. Rebooting is a convenient way to explain that away.

Star Trek has always been known for pushing diversity so I give them slack for that. The first two episodes did feel very Wonder Woman-ish with all the males (Federation or Klingon) being either cucks and/or overly aggressive and threatening (ergo bad). I do see the new captain is going to be a strong male so I'm waiting for that. If the first two episodes were the whole show, I'd be passing on what IMO would be feminist liberal propaganda.

So CBS (Sony) is holding Trekies for ransom. The first episode (the pilot) was carried on regular broadcast while the rest of the 16 episodes will be carried on CBS All Access, their new subscription service. I'm getting sick to death with all these restricted streaming services. I didn't sign up for Netflix since they didn't carry Ray Donovan nor Breaking Bad. Shomi went out of service because they fucked up their agreement with Showtime and Crave doesn't carry Game of Thrones. I'm not paying for another limited subscription service...fungula Sony!

It's unfortunate since I know Jason Isaacs will kill as a Starship Captain, but I'll have to content myself with this:

In Hollywood connections are everything.

Jason Isaacs made the final cut to replace Pierce Brosnan as 007, Daniel Craig had Steven Spielberg's support. Same thing happened with Warner Brothers when they decided to relaunch the Batman franchise. Numerous directors submitted their plans but Christopher Nolan had Al Pacino's support.
