OJ is still standing but he's in the same boat. And he will violently offend again.

Hernandez's family is suing the Patriots and the NFL for $20 million.

The case may not be strong but the NFL owners greed and cruelty and their ultra sleazy Commissioner be brought into line. The vast majority of players have some form of impairment. Most of the feared Oakland/LA Raiders defense have died from CTE or some form of steroid abuse. The only one who, miraculously, is still standing is Ted "the Mad Stork" Hendricks. John Matuszak died of an enlarged heart, he was 49. Lyle Alzado died of a brain tumour. Both their passing are the byproduct of PED abuse. Having met him, Alzado's death was particularly sad for me to take. He was so fierce on the gridiron that I was afraid to approach him. He completely disarmed me with his jovial good nature - caught me completely off guard.

And then there's the great LC Greenwood. He lived with intense pain for the last 20 years of his life. He was the polar opposite on Aaron Hernandez. During the football off-season he was a substitute teacher, many times going into poor neighbourhoods. He continued teaching after he retired, giving back to the community the best way he knew how. He didn't even get close to his 70th birthday. To this day the best defensive end to ever play the game.

Hernandez' crimes are NOT the results of CTE. He was a wannabe gangbanger, period.
CTE damage has largely be done or started long before a player makes it to the NFL. The micro-concussions suffered along the way from Pop Warner up through high school and into college have more effect than what occurs ultimately in the NFL.

Cannot even begin to fathom what football players go through:

"Webster was afflicted with a condition suffered by far older patients with Alzheimer’s Disease. It was called Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE, caused by repeated blows to the head. During his football career, from high school to university to the NFL, Webster, it has been estimated, went through the equivalent of 25,000 car crashes"

+1. Have you ever noticed, especially in college, that when a player makes a big play, his teammates run up and head butt him, head slap him to congratulate him. Players are their own worst enemies. I like that the NCAA has put in a targeting rule to try and reduce the number of hits to the head.

The issue w Hernandez is that his murders were absolutely senseless. They happened when he got mad over trivialities. Even gangbangers don't act like that.

I'm seeing a lot of sense in this CTE diagnosis.

You're playing football. How do you expect to NOT get concussions? Everyone knows what the sport involves.

His acts of violence didn't start after entering the NFL. Dude was a loose cannon long before putting on an NFL jersey.

How can family sue the NFL over this? That would set a precedent for every football player past and present to sue. Concussions are part of the job.

Agree pro sports are scum. Is hockey next? Before unions no one even thought about such issues, but pro sports still has a lot a cleaning up to do and massive law suits will be an incentive.

How about removing cleats to start? Your feet dig in then you are hit and there goes your joints.

Key phrase is 'wanna be'.
He was too stupid to be a gangbanger.
Caught up in the gangsta lifestyle.
And as was pointed out he was like that long before NFL.
His murders were pre-meditated. Not just random violence or in the heat of passion acts or precipitous over reactions due to lack of anger control or emotional dysregulaation. In those instances the emotional state subsides and often the person doesn't recall the incident. There was none of tht with Hernandez. He knew exactly what he was doing. And that does not fit with the behavioural symptomology associated with CTE.

They may be part of the job, but did anyone inform players of the long-term consequences (assuming you live long)?

If there was a caveat to the large contracts, that you may not be able to retire in comfort or for a long while (due to CTE or head injuries), that might be a better defense (no pun intended) for the NFL if they were sued.

If anything the lawsuit should be against the attorney for not using it as a defense at trial.

What's the average lifespan of an NFL player, 55-60 years old? No secret there!

What would a "safe" football game look like? No tackles?

It was also brought up during his trial that he was a daily pot user.Little research has been done into the long term chronic use of pot. I bet if you go back to the 50's,60's and up to current players they all would say "I love the game and money and will deal with the consequences later" .
There are lots of old timers who have no signs of brain disease. Jim Brown comes to mind.

How would it be a defense in a criminal trial?

I'm a lawyer. Help me out with your thoughts here.
