Toronto is a world class city, nothing underscores that more than recent events with Tafelmusik.

Tafelmusik gave their first concert in 1984, founded by Jeanne Lemon she's been the orchestra's Music Director ever since. She has now retired and the former Concertmaster of La Orcestra De La Scala (no less) is taking her place: Elisa Citterio. She will make her debut with Tafelmusik Thursday night at Koerner Hall.

Tafelmusik initially gave their concerts at the gorgeous St Paul Trinity Church, the location was part of the charm. Now they are globally renowned, considered the best baroque ensemble in the world.

However, they still consider St Pauls their 'home' venue, and they put a whole whack of money into renos to better suit if for their concerts.

I've never heard the Chamber Choir, I'm going to correct that.

Ticket to the opening season concert are sold out, if I want to attend I'll have to pay through the nose. Ms Citterio left La Scala with a bang, they staged Wagner's Ring Cycle during her last season as Concertmaster. She left Milano at the end of 2016 , taking some RR and checking out our city.

Apparently the renovations to Trinity St Paul have been completed. A series of chamber music recitals featuring local talent have already been performed there.

How thoughtless of me, I forgot about Bruno Weill.

When Tafelmusik moved beyond the Baroque repertoire, he was their conductor (is he still there)? Weill recorded the Beethoven Symphonies with Tafelmusik at the St Lawrence Center.

Bruno was only ever a guest conductor. They work with him frequently when they perform in Europe, and yes, they did record all of the Beethoven symphonies with him on the podium. Jeanne Lamon was in charge of Tafel until her retirement a couple of years ago. Elisa Citterio is the new Music Director effective this season.

Even though Beethoven is "beyond the baroque", Bruno still brought a strong sense of period practice and interpretation to the music. Back in his day, Beethoven's music tended to be performed with smaller forces than say a 100-member Concertgebouw orchestra. Those early 1800's forces tended to be around the same size as the Tafel orchestra (possibly augmented with a few extra players). And of course, the instruments were still different in varying degrees from their modern incarnations, so the overall sound of the music is a bit different. If you could travel back in time to hear a Beethoven symphony played in the day, it would sound close to what the Tafel recordings sound like (based on what's known about period performance).

Of course the great thing about Beethoven (and many other composers) is that their music sounds great under many different interpretations. Rock on, herr Ludwig!

Period instruments can sound cold and mechanical under the wrong direction, I can't listen to Roger Norrington's interpretation of the Beethoven Symphonies.

Bruno Weill direction Tafelmusik became standard for period instrument interpretation, he bought warmth and inflection to the pieces. And he toured with the ensemble on several occasions playing a big part in their international success. He is currently the Music Director of two ensembles, one in Augsburg Germany and the other the Carmel Bach Festival Orchestra. The later came about from seed money by that musical aficionado Clint Eastwood. Tafelmusik would not have become the internationally recognized orchestra that it currently enjoys without Weill. Ms Lemon knew what she was doing, you can only go so far as a period ensemble.
