Maher is entertaining, but his logic is shoddy. What southern states did 50 years ago: a) failed, and b) is supported by no one any longer. That can hardly provide the foundation for supporting what California is trying to do today.
I don't blame Maher for his bit, because he's really only trying to entertain (and to keep doing so, he's got to keep in the good graces of Hollywood liberals).

Yes they do. California has no right to set up border posts and decide who enters California from Mexico.
