I like Robert Herjavec. Seems like a nice fellow.

But I'm curious to know how he actually founded Robert Herjavec in his basement, as the story goes. I've never been able to find any more information about it.

How does an English literature and political science major found a security software tech company?

Is the story legit?

He did sales at an arm of IBM for mainframes, learnt the business there and moved on. The company he founded were integrators, he didn't need to create anything. That landscape is a whole different story nowadays. There were a couple big players back then and computer industries were building steam (we're talking 1990 right), so starting a business like that wasn't necessarily *easy*, but it's not like it'd be today. More details here: http://fortune.com/2016/11/12/shark-tanks-robert-herjavec/

I think there's still opportunities in that space but it's in very niche areas

I've met Robert Herjavec several times and was a business partner at both Brak and Herjavec Group. If Robert lips are moving, assume he is exaggerating to an extreme or manipulating. The stories I could tell, but several could be personally identifying.

Robert is a charismatic, smart, charming man of small stature and MASSIVE EGO. He loves to talk about himself, his accomplishments and his cars (claims the value of the wheels and tires on his lambo is more than a typical NA car). His office walls are full of pictures of the stars that "borrowed" his home (Jagger, Madonna, Travolta), business awards, articles in magazines about him, etc. He claims to know every major CEO in IT, blah, blah. He can talk about himself for 59 minutes of an hour meeting. I swear if I heard that vacuum story one more time, I'd ..........

I've been involved in a few sales meetings with him and his team and he's quick to crap all over his own people on what a poor job they did, but Robert himself closes deals not by brilliant negotiation or selling of value/features, but often with discounts (and then tries to force the partner (me) into protecting his margins)

I know, I'm a nobody commenting on an anonymous bulletin board, but if/when other people comment, there will be a long history of sleaze/manipulation/take advantage-of of his personal and business partners and employees for his personal gain. Not in a crafty, outsmarting business way, but in a grey truth, take advantage, try to renegotiate existing contracts kind of way. For example, he wasn't the founder of Brak, he talked his way into the company and through manipulation of his trusting partners got more than his fair share of the profits from selling it to AT&T (or was it Allstream at the time?), I can't say too much more.

I am NOT saying Herjavec is dishonest, I think he probably does everything legally and doesn't push the limits in that way.

Thanks for the input. It wouldn't surprise me at all if what you say is true. Frankly, it often requires stepping over heads, manipulation, and a huge ego to go from nothing and into something.

Zero doubt that Herjavec went from rags to riches based on his hard work, intelligence, drive and ambition. He doesn't take no for an answer, has a plan B, C and D pre-ready and will learns what he needs to know very quickly. He is one of those guys that have a "way" with people - I would NOT call him a sociopath as IMHO he's not evil, but he has the cool manipulate cunning you associate with the trait. He won't destroy his partner, but would take 95% of the money from his pocket without blinking.

I'm not kidding though, if you ever meet him, he will talk non-stop about himself and each time the old stories get more and more embellished.

Haha that wouldn't surprise me either. In the linked article above, he admits to having a chip on his shoulder stemming from childhood that's never gone away.

There's nothing here that I'd disagree with! He used to call me looking for business and just would not take no for an answer. Even when I clearly explained to him how his solutions didn't fit my business model, he continued to call. Eventually he gave up - and, obviously, went on to bigger and better things. Good for him.

I've met him on occasion ... he's no dragon or shark he's a snake. I was given warning ahead of time of his verbal diarrhea and stayed away but you could see others he tries to entrance with his wit and charm. We tend to see one side of him but there is a darker side that manifests elsewhere.. that is the true person that hides behind that smile.
