The estimate cost of a new hockey arena in Calgary is $890 million. The owners of the Calgary Flames want something approaching the sweetheart deal Edmonton gave to the Oilers for a new arena. Daryl Katz got the city of Edmonton to pony up for over half of the construction cost. Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi rejected the proposal. Good move, enough with the corporate welfare to build sports venues. The same applies to Toronto. If there is to be World Cup games in the city, MLSE should pay for the cost of expanding BMO Field themselves.
