The Feds have given Ontario a stern recommendation not to run an LCBO type cannabis enterprise, yet Ontario did it anyway. The optics are very bad. Ironically Ottawa just might step in and force the break up of any provincial monopolies or even find ways to exort a cut from Ontario through withholding transfer payments or imposing new taxes. The RCMP anticipates new and lasting problems from an Ontario style government run pot trade. BC seems to be more in harmony with Ottawa on this one .Wynne enters an election and is handing out carrots and us obviously allied with pot Czars like Smitherman. The hypocrisy is thick here.

This is why I rarely vote Liberal or heaven forbid NDP. They are against free-enterprise and capitalism, and they want to run the whole country themselves (like Cuba)

I agree. The whole government leadership is a complete train wreck both provincially and federally.

Seems to me that if you accept the status quo on Liquor, you should also be accepting Ontario's plan. I'd personally like to see open markets on both, not that I smoke pot.

From what I recall, when pretty boy Trudeau stated he is making pot legal, didn't he also state it would be up to the provinces on how they want to sell it?

Like someone else said "OP,state your source"

The Federal Government released a report on or about April 21, 17, (421 day) where they announced July 1, 2018 as the decriminalization date for the possession of cannabis and in that report they said they did not support an "LCBO" typed model, with the RCMP recently in very public agreement. This information is recently in the media, today's National Post in particular. The Globe and Mail also has several articles as well. I think that the province has exposed itself to a huge liability. The provincial government doesn't have to sell marijuana with a monopoly in order to discourage use by minors which is the purported goal of this decriminalization. The black market in sales to minors will still thrive as does the illegal cigarette market.
When someone visits the LCBO advice can be given on different alcohols by government staff towards which wine would go with a meal, or which Scotch has a certain flavour etc. but no advice on how to how get intoxicated or levels of intoxication is given. However, the pot purchaser is explicitly seeking drug intoxication and as a result may want information on the subtitles of Indica versus Sativa, alcohol and cannabis combinations, different types of europhia etc. It is unclear how the government workers who will be legal dealers will answer those questions. There will be neophyte law abiding citizens coming in, trying weed for the first time who may have questions. Will these provincial government workers have to be experienced or knowledge in THC levels, interactions with the over the counter medications and herbal remedies? The disclaimers that will have to be posted in the provincial government pot shops will have to be so informative, with so many medical negatives that it would look so asinine, melancholic and hypocritical for any to be the vendor, let alone a government. Private pot shops will not be encumbered by this phenomenon to the same extent. Currently medical schools offers no training in cannabis pharmacology to their students. The shit eating grin on Kathleen Wynne's and Justin Trudeau faces may soon go away when the shit hits the fan. What is the next activity to be legalized and run by the government? My post is based on my interpretation of the media reports and my own intuition.

I wonder if this factored into the the Province's decision to control the sale of weed?

"Health Canada moves to ban non-prescription codeine sales.
Codeine products now widely available over the counter would require prescriptions under new federal measures."

because it is too easy to extract the codeine out of the tablets.... I'm suprized why this did not happen earlier.

The difference is that distilling takes a considerable amount of skill, expertise and capital if the distiller is not to produce unpalatable - and often dangerous - rotgut. Brewing maybe not so much. Growing weed on the other hand takes soil and water. Anyone can do it. The govt is making a stand on the allegation that illicit grow is potentially dangerous and using that to justify the weed shop raids that have been happening. Open to comments from frequent users as to the validity of this allegation.

Oagre, yep, soil and water is all it takes. Not sure if weed stocks are going to be the winners some think they will be.

It most likely was part of the reason as the Feds wish to do some damage control along with addressing the opioid crisis as codeine is derived from morphine.

FWIW every grower uses fertilizers. A responsible grower would stop using it a few weeks before harvesting and would switch to pure watering to flush the fertilizer out of the plant.
An irresponsible grower would fertilize as much as possible as it adds weight to the product.

Yea, this smells pretty bullshitty to me at this point.

I can't find any statements using simple G searches to support OP, and would very much be interested in seeing a link to whatever article he's referencing.
