Was watching a clip on Deadspin where a team was third and goal, fumbled the snap, and then the ball got mishandled all the way down the field before the offensive team recovered on their own 7 yard line. Pretty brutal.

Question: At some point could the offensive team have not just punted the ball out of bounds in order to make it a dead ball? I realize it's easier said than done but when you're nudging it all the way back to your own goal line then at some point you might as well just try to punt the damn ball out of bounds rather than try to recover it with your hands.

10 yard penalty ... you can't kick a loose or fumbled ball. It will be reviewed by refs after whether intentional or not but you have to use your hands

Interesting. Still might be worth it, and in this particular case it would have been.

Thanks!
Maybe depends because by the sound of it a lot happened to get the ball all the way back there, like I said refs will review it and then after the play the guy who did kick the ball is going to have to face his coaches and explain it, how many drills you think they are going to put him through for costing them 10 yards? Hopefully he is not a rookie.

Enjoying the first Sunday of the NFL season!!!

I think what OP is saying is that if they had kicked it out before it got all the way back to their own 7 the 10 yard penalty would have put them in better field position. IE, as the ball was fumbled/bumbled at 50 yard line and kicked, then it would be at their own 40 instead of the 7, a 33 yard gain.

I understood that kicking out before it reached all the way back to the red zone, but the players didn't know it would end up there, it's an afterthought now... so if a player kicks it before then what's he going to tell his team that it would have ended up at the 7? .. players are told the rules to never kick the ball only use the hands, just like in soccer never use your hands, so if he punched it out while trying to grab it then no penalty.

If the defense had gotten possession of the ball even for a second then fumbled, it would have been 1st and 10 for the offense. 7 more yards and it would've been a safety I would think

Thx for the link, that was quite the play!

What wonders me is that it appears the defensive player(s) kicked the ball. I would have thought they would be penalized for that. Interestingly you can download the NCAA rulebook for free. But trying to find the rule that applies to this was frustrating, maybe someone else has more time to peruse the rules.
