Judging by the response of the NFLPA to the Ezekiel Elliot suspension, the relationship is poisonous.

Some may disagree but gridiron football is not a sustainable sport. Commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL owners have been making bucketloads of profits while the players are withheld guaranteed contracts. The Colin Kaepernick situation demonstrates the preponderance of power the owners have. Then there's the looming crisis of retired player's health, the vast majority of them end up with CTE. For every Michael Strahan there are seven Mike Webster's. Roger Goodell has been obfuscating on this issue, the owners are more than happy to shirk their responsibilities. As matters stand the players have nothing to lose - even if a Tom Brady betrays them.

The head count is grim:

Agreed. The players need to stand strong together, even if it means sitting out a season or two. The NFLPA is the weakest of all the professional sports unions. Time to change that and get all the players what they deserve.

The average NFL career is too short for players to lose a whole season of earning power. This is why the owners have always had the players over a barrel.

Stronger union means increased costs to the owners which means increased ticket prices and increased costs to viewership.

The NFL generates over $7 Billion/yr in TV revenue. If the owners choose to be greedy that's their choice. A fairer split of the pie is what should be done.

That all may be well and true, but it does not change the fact that if the owners costs are increased, it will be passed on to the fans in various ways. And owners being owners, they may even see it as a way to increase costs to the fans even more than theirs will have increased.

Fairer treatment to the players means we will pay more. I don't know about you, but I am pretty sure that the players, on average, already have a better lifestyle than I do. I am putting my interests ahead of those of these elite athletes.
