We talk about the Amazon Effect, the Retail Apocalypse, automation, and so on.

On top of that, populations in nations that consume most products/services will begin to decline in 2018 if the following article is to be believed: http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-06-26/end-growing-consumer-base-and-beginning-decline

If populations in all major consumer based nations begins to decline, how will that impact real estate, industry, manufacturing, retail, etc? Are we looking at a worldwide endless cycle of recessions and depressions in the future? Will large swathes of land either in the burbs or urban landscapes be left to rot when they become depopulated? Will people move into or outside of city cores?

Japan is a test bed for this, but at the same time it is an exporter and can rely on other countries to consume its good. IMHO automation is a much larger threat. However consumption of medical goods and services will continue to climb. It will be an interesting transformation, and yes I think urban centers will continue to grow barring a revolution in personal transportation. I think some trends like falling gasoline demand in the US combined with a strong economy and quite telling.
