Indeed last summer I read about this very problem.
The recommendation was that grills should be scraped but not brushed, after scraping a pumice stone should be used.

Why I always wipe grill again with wet sponge to rid of any metal bristles. That shit can be painful.

I just spray the grill with pam, even if I forget to spray it I still put it on after and wait a few minutes. it will make it easier to wipe with a scouring pad and cloth.

I use a wire brush, but when done, I take some paper towels and wipe the grill.

I do this to remove the soot and grease. You'd be amazed how much comes off.

I knew a guy that got a piece of wire from the brush stuck in his intestines. They had to operate, damn near killed him.

There are some new wooden ones that when heated up align with your grill rack. Works great. And then some oil before grilling works great as well.
