I've been having trouble with my big toe joint for weeks now. Sometimes the pain is mild, sometimes it's fucking excruciating as hell. How do you stop it ? Allopurinol and colchisine don't seem to work fast enough or cure it completely.

In a place far, far away
Cut your toe off.

You do know in Canada we have universal free health care - go see a doctor.

Hi behemonth_dick,

I have been there. None of the short term drugs really worked for me. (Indo, Cholcochine etc...). Your Gout attack will eventually go away. Mine use to last a weekend and as I got older, it was a few weeks. None of the standard remedies worked (apple cider vinegar, cherry juice, etc...). All bull shit. I even became a vegetarian for two years. This did not help me.

I avoided taking the daily Alluporinal pill for years as I am not really a pill popper. My gout attacks use to occur once a year to once every one or two months and the attacks were lasting longer. I was also getting concerned about potential damage to the joints in my foot. Finally I had enough and decided to go on the pill. Best decision that I ever made. One pill a day before bedtime and I have been bulletproof. Went from limping around 50% of the time to no gout attack for 5+ years now. No side effects.

I was told that even if you do not have a gout attacks, having a high uric acid level all the time is not healthy as you can get kidney stones and other problems.

I hope this helps.

Just eat really clean in the mean time and drink lots of water. I had some attacks that were up to 3-4 weeks long. I had no idea of how long these would last. This was the most frustrating part.

BTW, Alluporinal is to prevent an attack. It won't do anything once you have an attack.

An article with anecdotal things to try (somewhat grounded in science).
http://www.prevention.com/health/18-ways-to-treat-gout

Sugar and alcohol are common triggers.

Naproxen (Aleve) may help with the inflammation.

As gheu noted above, allopurinol once a day can prevent it from occurring in the first place.

It's pretty serious if you've been suffering for weeks. When I've had a gout attack it's been for a few days. Cherry juice has worked for me, thought that may have been a placebo effect.

As has been suggested, see your doctor. A heavy duty anti-inflammatory can take care of the problem in the short term, while allopurinol is effective over the long term. Good luck.

I had a couple of attacks, no fun. The cherry juice helps a bit with the pain if you have nothing else. That with Aleve. As everyone else mentioned, the prescription medication takes care of it right as rain

Indomethacin is the worst med ever.

An anti inflammatory helps. Try a double dose of aleve.

Get a referral to a rheumatologist. They'll get you on the right meds to avoid recurrence.

Best way to fix Gout

Do not drink any Alcohol or Beer reason the kidney is become to busy working to getting rid the alcohol and it not getting rid of the uric acid in your blood..And also drink lot of water like 2 litre of water a days so you can pee out the uric acid from your body!

http://www.webmd.com/arthritis/news/20091019/fighting-gout-with-skim-milk-and-water#1
From the webmd article:

Reducing Risk of Gout's Return

Results showed the more water they drank, the lower their risk of recurrent gout attacks. "For example, having five to eight glasses of water in the past 24 hours was associated with a 40% lower risk of having a gout attack, compared with drinking none or one glass of water in the past day," says Tuhina Neogi, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine.

Neogi stresses that people with gout shouldn't substitute water for other treatments their doctors prescribe.

"But this suggests that dehydration may indeed be an important trigger for gout attacks, and that drinking water may be a simple intervention to help reduce the risk of recurrent attacks," she tells WebMD.

For me personally I avoid all alcohol and drink 2 litre of water ( sometime hot water or mostly cold water) and pee out all those uric acid ( urine is made up of uric acid)
Your kidneys take uric acid out of your blood and put it into urine so that it can leave your body. ... High uric acid levels can also cause kidney stones. That why it important to let your kidney work on getting rid of your uric acid from your blood by pee it out.

I know gout attack is very painful..you literally have to crawl to the bathroom!

I haven't had a major gout attack over a year ! I am my worst enemy when I don't follow my own advice and I can feel a small attack coming on ... and I rush to and and drink lots of water and hope an attack ( gout fare up don't hit me) and when it do hit me I take info medicine( Indomethacin) for the small pain( minor flare up of gout attack) and usually it gone by morning or by end of weekend!

I know that I have to pee 1.5 litre to 2 litre of urine to get rid of the uric acid in the blood , but I find sometime it a hassle to drink 2 to 3 litre of water a day! That what I read on a books from a top doctor who an expert on gout disease! I don't follow my own advice..lol.
My brother-in law have gout and he swore that drinking apple cider vinegar stop the attack immediately.. Personally I think it depend on how severe the gout attack ( pain level or the level antiflammtory attack) has on your body to work. Google on the info or check it out on YouTube . Plenty of info!

PPS . Eat lots of raw vegetables and fruits stay away from refined sugar and meat and avoid alcohol or beer and try to eat heathy food (raw food "vegatables") this way of eating will heal your body and kidney!
Easier said then done!
When you continuously get gout attack and the pain become too frequently and you will start to change your eating habit / diet eventually! Avoid food or raw vegatables that have high purine ( Google which food have high purine to avoid eating it) like chickpeas!

Good luck!

Codeine works great for moderate pain though.

You might have slight adverse reactions at old age, but you can't really die from it

I was told that even if you do not have a gout attacks, having a high uric acid level all the time is not healthy as you can get kidney stones and other problems.
Allopurinol it may be annoying in that you don't like taking pills.

However, having had a bilateral blockage of (both of) my kidneys due to uric acid stones, when I was told that Allopurinol has 99 percent odds of preventing a recurrence, you bet I'm on it or whatever may replace it, for life.

As Gheu, mentioned Alluporinal is a management medication so it takes awhile to lower your blood uric acid levels.

Diclofenac

Surprised no one mentioned it yet, one of the most effective anti-Inflammatory drugs out there.

Starts working in hours after taking the first dose.

I only get a big toe attack a couple times a year, so when I ask the doc about a pain killer, he replied, "remove the inflammation , the pain disappears" , so true.
Long term use does have side effects especially if on other meds.
