There are free web only versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, but they're fairly limited. There's also Google Docs, which is online or has an accompanying Android or iOS app. If you must have something installed on your PC, then try OpenOffice. All of these options will be able to open and edited Microsoft files like docx, xls, ppt, rtf, txt, etc. but there sometimes can be some formatting problems. Also, macros stored inside a Word doc or Excel sheet might not work properly.

Been using LibreOffice for years.

It's also a whole office suite of programs.

Openoffice is pretty good. Just remember to change the default settings to save documents as Microsoft file format.
Also Microsoft onedrive is decent but, as mentioned above need internet to access.(you can download copies of files and use openoffice when offline)

Ok this thread is just.... odd in the responses....

Best free Office product?
Microsoft Office 365

Pay $10 per month to get subscription (or less since promos often on)
You get Office 365 + 5 Terabytes of online storage included

For most people if you use iCloud or Google Drive or whatever the Microsoft online OneDrive is CHEAPER (by far) to use and you get Office included (up to *10* copies, 5 for mutliple PCs and 5 for mobile devices)
Since nearly everyone is using some form of cloud storage these days, switching over to MS costs less & you get software too
