That was an amazing shot.

That "news" source is a bit suspect.

Some Fake News: https://beta.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/canadian-elite-special-forces-sniper-sets-record-breaking-kill-shot-in-iraq/article35415651/?ref=https://www.theglobeandmail.com&

I found it interesting to hear what goes into a shot at these distances. A quick but memorable Rob Furlong segment on HC:

He annihilated the previous record by 1000 metres, and considering that was 2500 metres it's an improvement of almost 50%. It could stand for quite a while.

Apparently it took 10 seconds to hit the target... impressive!

I have a hard time understanding how people can celebrate the killing of a human being. It is a sad reflection of the time we live in.

Thats a pretty slow bullet to take 10 seconds to travel 3500 meters. Something sounds off about that statement.

No, not off. This round is a .50 calibre and is massive in comparison to other ammunition, that being the .30 cal, which was a WW2 standard load. So the size of the round being massive, it takes longer to reach its target. One calibre being used today is the 338 Lapua, which is a well known snipers weapon as well. A very powerful round in its own right.

If im not mistaken the 50 caliber is a supersonic round that travels approximately 1500 meters per second. For that shot to take 10 seconds the bullet would have to be moving subsonic, and have some kind of stabilizer or else he would be pointing at the clouds.

Actually its about 800-900 meters per second I was off by quite a bit, but still supersonic and should only take about 4 seconds of flight to travel 3500m. Still an amazing shot either way.

The bullets velocity slows as it travels down range, due to wind resistance. Can check the chart below.

50 caliber balistics chart
https://barrett.net/accessories/ammunition/50bmgm33ball/

At 1500 yards the bullet would drop 967 inches or 80 feet, and the rate of drop increases with distance/time as the bullet accelerates downward due to gravity.

Think this was a shot he took to see if he could come close, or maybe to disrupt their movements. To hit something at that distance would be pure luck. Well done.

Touche!

Every Islamist Fascist Extremist should be killed and/or their operation foiled. For they are still trying to get their hands on uranium to make a dirty bomb (saw this on the cover of a Time Magazine). Then we have bigger problems.
