4 for 4. So much Winning!!

Republican Karen Handel has won Georgia’s special election, holding off the most well-funded House candidate in history and deflating Democrats who yearned for a special election rebuke to President Donald Trump.

Handel, who previously served as Georgia’s secretary of state, had 52 percent of the vote to Democrat Jon Ossoff’s 48 percent when the Associated Press called the race late Tuesday night after a six-month campaign in which Republicans hammered Ossoff as an ill fit for a traditionally conservative district.

With her win, Handel protected Republicans’ 24-seat House majority and their hold on the 6th District in Atlanta’s northern suburbs, a traditionally GOP seat that looked to be slipping from the party when Trump only carried it by 2 points in November. Democrats, spying an opening, poured millions of dollars into the special election when former Rep. Tom Price resigned to join Trump’s cabinet as the secretary of Health and Human Services. Ossoff, a former congressional aide and documentary filmmaker, captured the anti-Trump fervor coursing through the Democratic Party and raised over $23 million for his campaign.

While Handel’s victory only brings the Republican House majority back to its baseline level after the 2016 election, it denied Democrats a momentum boost toward the 2018 midterms and a victory that party activists dearly seek after five months of GOP control in Washington. The GOP has now won each House special election of 2017, after Trump selected a handful of congressmen from conservative seats for his Cabinet — though Republicans had a close call in South Carolina Tuesday night, where Republican Ralph Norman won the state’s 5th District by a surprisingly close 3-point margin.

Handel’s win also comes at a critical time for congressional Republicans, who have gotten bogged down trying to pass major legislation, including on health care.
Turnout soared in the special election, with Republican outside groups spending millions of dollars to drive more GOP voters to the polls this time than in the April primary. Ossoff and Handel finished first and second in the all-party primary two months ago, setting up Tuesday’s runoff — though Ossoff came just a few thousand votes short of winning the district outright in April. Ossoff held an edge in most public polling during the runoff, but Handel closed the gap just before Election Day.

It set a record for most spent on a district election.

Guess the fundraising emails will be increasing for the Dems shortly.

I'm hearing Ossoff spent nearly 40 Million, just goes to show you, money can't buy you elections

Handel is also the first Female Republican to win GA.

You know that is the Republicans actually lost GEORGIA that would be unbelievably devastating. Barely holding on to a safe seat is not exactly good news for the GOP.
Considering the present climate it is.

Much like Hillary did the Dems are allowing Hubris to get in the way of good election strategy. And the press again looks shoddy for pushing the narrative again.

If they can't win them now it's going to become even tougher to flip them in 2018.

Not much of a surprise, especially in Ga. It was another mistake by the Democrats to frame this special election as a vote on Trump. Local Congressional elections rarely are a vote on a president and, six months into the term, that's just foolish.

I can see why Trump admires the rulers of Russia and Saudi Arabia, other countries governed by the richest, who consider political opponents and journalists to be criminals.
In fact the Dems may well have outspent the GoP.

And I have on numerous occasions derided, insulted and come out against Citizen's United Decision and the Super Pacs.

In fact if you want to get into it estimates I saw had Trump spending about 270 million and Clinton over a Billion. So if you want to go there then Clinton is a much bigger Villain.

And they sure as hell are treating Trump as a criminal before any proof is put forth no?

Careful of your criteria and accusations Matt. He was by far the outsider in this election.

Supie, I want to know where was your OSS before you laughed off, why you didn't take better care of such a sensitive part, and whether we can now expect intelligent comments on American politics from you, instead of the OSSified, GORPy propaganda we've been used to getting.

Regardless of who won this election, it's encouraging to see that parachuting a candidate into a district and funding him almost exclusively with money coming from people/organizations outside of the district is a strategy that can fail.

.
He outspent Handel something like 6-1. He couldn't even vote for himself because he doesn't even live in the district.

I guess "We Hate Trump" wasn't a winning message lol.

Not in the least. Butler's always gentle when he's wrong, besides my version's still funnier — to me — and we all proved unfunny won't be fixed by comment.

Un-Presidential? We always gotta hope that can be fixed, and comment's all the rest of us non-Presidents have.

My faith in the Republic has been restored, these past couple of years. Jeb failed to buy the nomination, Hillary massively outspent Trump and Crazy Bernie, and in Georgia Democrats just went nuts with cash- outspending Republicans 5 to 1 and it was not even close. There is a message here of some kind. Like, maybe, run on something ?
