The fire is said to have spread from the 2nd floor to the roof in just 15 minutes.

Probably started by some idiot flicking his cigarette butt

Firefighters were only able to get to the 11th of the 27 floors. It's unclear how people above the 11th floor would have gotten out. Also some people are saying the fire alarm never sounded, so it's unclear how they would have known to get out given that the fire started at 1am when most would be asleep.

I thought that with modern fire protection engineering in buildings these days that a fire like this was almost impossible.
I hope engineers in the future look to this building as a case study in how not to build a high rise apartment.

Apparently this building had no working fire alarms and no working sprinkler systems and the whole thing just burned right through from the bottom floor to the top floor.
Some demolition firm is no doubt going to have to bring the building down. Maybe one floor at a time from the top down because this area of the city looks too dense for a building implosion to get approved.

Heard on the BBC that the building was grandfathered and as you stated had neither a sprinkler system, nor an integrated fire alarm system. Undoubtedly they are going to looking at the fact that the fire spread very rapidly both vertically and horizontally which is apparently quite unusual. Also that the individual flats proved not to be fire resistant and the means of egress were rapidly blocked.

We don't have grandfathering I'm pretty sure. All buildings have to have working alarm systems and public ones sprinklers.

The negligence here both by the building owners and city for allowing this fire trap to exist is astounding. No doubt changes will be coming.

More details coming out. So sad. This was a social housing building. People who were already poor probably lost all their worldly possessions. Apparently, hundreds are unaccounted for.

One resident dropped her baby 5 stories who was caught by a good samaritan.

In Toronto we have balcony fires due to careless cigarettes. In most cases, fire is confined to one unit or one floor.

Only 12 confirmed dead but they are saying the true number may be over a hundred dead. Many many people are "missing".

Apparently the exterior cladding looks likely to be the catalyst for the fast & easy spread of the fire.
Most apartment fires here are contained due to better building codes & construction.
That type of cladding is already banned in Ontario.

They are saying entire families are missing and that firefighters still haven't searched the upper floors where most of the dead we'll be.

It could be hundreds of people dead.

It is going to be one of the worst fires in British History.

17 dead, 75 injured, out of 400 people, so as Fuji writes, well over 100 people are still missing and likely to have died.

This is the same thing that happened in Dubai on New Year's Eve.
This is a new build so they are using the same dangerous materials.

Again British overbearing superiority complex gets in the way - "how could this happen in Britain". Dickweeds, how could it not happen in Britain!

Better to reduce the surplus population, Dickens doesn't lie. With public housing structures the construction is slap dash. If they don't collapse they catch fire. The electrical wiring in these buildings is shoestring quality, as we saw from the footage the fire was all encompassing. Slapdash wiring and band aid insulation caused the building to become a matchbox.

We here in Canada are so lucky we don't live in Britain. British citizens got their faces rearranged during the Financial Meltdown of 2007 - 09. The top 0.1% made out like thieves under Gordon Brown and George Osborne. The Patrician David Cameron introduced punishing service cuts at a time when Britons could least afford them. He paid no attention to the riots of 2013 and went ahead with his Brexit referendum. And how has the %0.1 repaid government largesse, they're moving to Monte Carlo and Ibiza. The rise of Jeremy Corbyn is no fluke.

Frankly IV, I doubt that renovated high rise public housing dating back to the 1970's in either Canada or the U.S. is superior.
