Having just been entertained with one of the most successful seasons in recent memory, I'm sure a lot of fans like me have already started counting down to the start of next season. Until then it's going to be a very interesting off season as some very important decisions will have to be made:

1) upgrading the defence,
2) ufa's,
3) expansion draft protection,
4) back up goalie and depth, and
5) players in the final year of their contracts.

The off season for the Leafs have started today with the announcement of the resigning of Zaitsev and Smith.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/...-zaitsev-long-term-extension-ben-smith-inked/

I've heard that Smith was signed to be exposed in the expansion draft so to protect Komerov and Martin.

I wish Zaitsev was 2" taller and 20 pounds heavier but he does play a rugged style. Don Cherry doesn't think he's worth the 7 year deal but I trust Lou an Mike's judgement on talent than Cherry's.

I'm sure a few other interesting moves will follow.

Quit whining about Zaitsev. He's unrestricted. It's market value. That's what it costs for comparable players of his ilk. You think Leafs can just blink and get someone better at a cheaper price? Have you seen the Leafs defense lately? They're thin.

Why are you ranting ?

I like Zaitsev and I have faith in Lou's judgement but the Leafs need more size and toughness.

Your forgot number 6. Raising the price of food and drinks at the games. They already raised ticket prices.

Don Cherry is a buffoon who's full off methane. He lucked into the Boston Bruins, riding on Harry Sinden's coattails, then ran the Colorado Rockies and Mississauga Ice Dogs into the ground.

I would resign Komarov, he led by example. Without him the rookies would have not understood the work ethic needed to be NHL players. While the team matures you want around - it would be hell if he signed with the Sabres.

They have to draft another goalie but Kaskisuo has taken over as the starting goalie for the Marlies in the AHL playoffs.

Trivia question: Who coached Team Canada in the 1972 Canada - USSR Series?

Leo Komarov has 1 year left.

Leafs also signed Carl Grundstrom to an entry level contract. Apparently he's a younger and bigger version of Komarov.
But doesn't have NHL playoff experience like Komarov. But I suppose they gotta start somewhere.

Komarov never had playoff experience at one time also. You can include all the rookies this year as well. Komarov only has a few more years left if he's not on the decline already. He's a third liner who plays a gritty disturber game. I suppose it'll probably not be easy to find someone like that. Those types of players are very effective. And if they can score you got yourself a Marchand.

I am looking for a pre-expansion draft deal with Ducks or Wild or another team with more than three D and a bunch of forwards to protect.

Looking at the Oilers, it is obvious the Leafs need more size and muscle to compete past round 1.

Freddie Gauthier will be lost for up to six months after he was injured by an apparent dirty hit by Jake Dotchin. This is the same guy who deliberately went after Kapannen's knees and put him out for several weeks, and he also went after Matthews' knees when he was called up by the Lightnings the last time they played the Leafs. He's well known for his dirty hits.

Now we know why Marchand speared him.

Jake Dotchin got suspended for 3 games. But Freddy is out for 6 months a long road to get back and a set back to making the Leafs next season.

Seriously doubt the Leafs will protect Martin, I like him but his type of player is far easier to replace.
That leaves two spots to use to protect other players ... Leivo, Leipsic are my guesses.
If they resign Boyle(I want them to bring him back) I think they wait until after the expansion draft.

The Leafs have only three legit NHL caliber centres in Matthews, Kadri and Bozak, assuming they want to keep Nylander on the wing.

BOZAK will be in the last year of his contract and with the long term injury to Gauthier, they'll probably have no choice but to bring back Boyle as well as acquiring more centre depth.

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Tuesday that the hockey club has signed free agent defencemen Calle Rosén and Andreas Borgman to two-year entry level contracts.

Two undrafted Swedes (21 & 23) with decent numbers in the SHL.
Low risk signings. It's like getting two 1st round draft picks. This doesn't cost the Leafs anything. If they pan out and become NHL regulars then it's a great signing. If not, then it's only 2 years entry level and they can left as RFA or sent back to Sweden. The Leafs are high on Borgman though.
