Connor Brown is a heart and soul player, a low draft pick who made it to the big club through sheer hard work. I wouldn't be so quick to trade him.

That should be the sticking point for both sides. If they wait till next year to do a deal, Nylander's performance next season could mean more money for him or savings for the Leafs. Some compromising is needed to get a deal done now.
Draisaitl's contract if done before Nylander's extension will go a long way in determining what the Leafs will have to pay Nylander. Another contract that will help to determine Nylander's salary is Gaudreau's contract. Nylander has more upside than Gaudreau, IMO, so he should make more than $6.75 million/year. If Draisaitl gets $8 to $9 million/year, Nylander's camp will probably be asking for about the same. If Nylander's contract extension is done this year, it will go a long way in determining what the Leafs will be facing after next season with Matthews and Marner. If the Leafs make it farther in the playoffs and Matthews and Marner have similar or better years than in their rookie seasons, the comings contracts for the three of them will be in the $28 to $30 million dollar range. If the cap does not increase to approx $80 million, there is no way the Leafs will be able to keep all three.[/QUOTE]

This is going to be the problem with teams who have too many young stars. It happened to Chicago and LA in their cup yrs. it's now hurting TB and Washington, having to trade good young players for draft picks because they can't afford to keep everyone. Salary cap isn't going to go up fast enough to help anyone so most teams will keep 2 highly paid stars and try and fill in the rest of their roster best they can.

What if the trade is for your favorite player Hanifin ?

Not that Carolina will trade Hanifin for just Brown, or if they'd even contemplate it, but if it's for significant upgrade on defense, and you have to give up talent to get that, I'd be all for it even though I do like Brown a lot too.

In the just completed rookie camp the best player was a 17 year old undrafted invitee Jacob Tortora who's 5'7" and 160 lbs. Just wondering how many small wingers you can have fit in the Leafs' roster.

Speaking of small undrafted forwards, Tyler Johnson was resigned for 7 years/35m. He had 19 goals 26 assists in 66 games which is comparable to Nylander's stats. He's much older ( 26 ) and has played over 300 games in5 years, but it's interesting to note that his rookie season stats were actually pretty close to Nylander's.

Based on this comparison maybe 6-6.5m X 7 are the ballpark figures they're working on ? Should Nylander being a first round pick and 7 years younger be worth 1-1.5m per year more ?

The Leafs will pick the best players to play. I doubt all the small wingers they have will make the Leafs.

Ryan Johansen of Nashville signs for $64 million for 8 years. He is a center and 25 years old. He scored 21 points in his rookie season (compared to 61 for Marner and Nylander) and had 61 points in 2016/17 regular season. He is closer to UFA status than Marner and Nylander but it makes you wonder what it will cost to sign the Leafs other two stars. If Marner and Nylander duplicate or have an even better second season and depending on what Draisatl signs for, $8 million may be the minimum required to sign both long term when the time comes.

Just wondering what's the holdup for the resigning of Brown. Could it be possible that they're trying to use him as a trade bait for a top four d man ? Not inking him now may give more flexibility to the team interested in him ?

Draisaitl signs 8 year extension for $68 million, $8.5 million per season.

agree. looks like u could be right. What was $6M a few years back is now $8M for the big stars. To keep the core long term
Marner $8.5M min.
Nylander $8M min.

and later on with Matthews at least $11M min.

Marner is a hockey version of Gio, his health will determine the size of his contract. Gio couldn't stay healthy in Italy but got a sweetheart deal in the less demanding MLS.

Nylander is more of a positional player. His passing and shooting could get him a bigger contract. Also he matches well with Matthews who doesn't have to play a traditional centerman's role when they are on the same line. That makes it difficult for opposing teams to defend against them.

I believe eventually, Nylander will be turned into a second line centre and Marner will be on the wing of either Matthews or Nylander (my guess Matthews). Two top of the line centre teams are difficult to defend against and in the Leafs case you have Kadri as a very good third line centre. For next season I would expect Matthews and Nylander to have monster years playing together for the full season. Marner will be playing with Bozak and JVR, both of whom will be playing for big contracts for the following season (that is of course if one or both are not traded). So while Marner may be more susceptible to the dreaded sophomore jinx, at least he will be playing with others who have incentive to have big years. Marner should also receive a lot of time on the first player play unit. If the cards fall into place for the Leafs big three, I would think the salaries for them will be in the $27 to $28 million range in a couple of years.

Connor Brown signed for 3 years. Great move by the Leafs.
At $2.1 million/year, it is a steal for them. Great deal for the Leafs. Hopefully Brown can continue the progress he made in 2016/2017.

Another great signing by the Leafs. Really starting to get the feeling Leafs management is going about things the right way. Can't say I've felt that way in a long, long time. But what do I know! ;)

Only 35 days until their first game!!!

Connor Brown on his new contract:

" I’m always trying to set myself up to be a Leaf for life. Growing up in this city, that means a lot to me. I think we did a good job of that with this contract. At this point, I’m just excited to get the season going. We’ve got an exciting team and we’re all excited for camp. "

I'm now officially a Connor Brown fan ???

With training camp starting next week, it may be time to look back at all the moves made this summer and discuss how you like these moves.

Essentially the Leafs replaced Hunwick and Boyle with Hainsey and Moore and I would say that's a wash. Marleau is an addition but I think it's a pickup for the purpose of replacing JVR who'll likely to be traded before the trade deadline. I have mixed feelings about Marleau's acquisition, he's been a great player but at 36 there's always the real possibility of a sharp decline without warning. The good news is he's a smooth skater and been relatively healthy and if Jagr can be effective at over 40, chances are good that he can be good for a year or two. His style of play should also mash well with the young guns and his experience and familiarity with Babcock should help.

The status of the pending unrestricted free agents of JVR, Bozak and Komarov will be subjects of debates throughout the season. As a fan I can't help feeling some loyalty to these three players who have been here through the years when the team was really bad and they have performed reasonably well. Now that the team has finally looked like its ready to compete but the economics of the cap system may force the team to part way with three of the longest serving members. JVR will most likely be gone as the team cant afford to sign him for 6-7 mil x 5 or 6 which he can get in an open market and there's Marleau. Komarov may also be expandable because of upcoming players. Bozak may be the hardest to replace as there's no depth in the centre position. Nylander may be an option but I think Babcock likes to have good depth in that key centre position.

The defence remains to be the biggest question mark imo. Except the addition of Zaitsev, this is the same core as the one two seasons ago when the team finished dead last and worse in most defensive categories. Based on last season's performance Reilly, Gardiner and Zaitsev are very capable as second pair defenders, but a lot of their deficiencies were masked by the good goaltending 0f Andersen who has solidified the goaltending position. The additions of the three young Swedes have greatly improved the depth on defence but it would be unreasonable to expect any of them to turn into a player like Werenski.

I can understand why a major trade hasn't happened to upgrade the defence. Defence help is at a premium and maybe Lou is being patient in waiting for the right deal to happen. I hope I'm wrong but without substantial improvement on defence, we may look back by season end and say the defence is the reason why the team fails.
