Boyfriends sold them dream of love and money for sex work

Karly and Olivia were tricked into the sex trade by their boyfriends, men who sold them a dream of money, love and security, who eventually became their pimps. (CTV News Toronto)

Karly, whose identity has been concealed, was 15-years-old when she started working as a prostitute. “At that time, when I was a teenager, I never got money in return for sex. It was always drugs,” she said. Olivia, whose name has also been changed to protect her identity, was 21-years-old when she started selling sex.

“I met a guy who I actually went to school with, I went to high school with him,” Olivia said. “We began dating and he basically groomed me for the sex trade.” ‘It’s almost like there’s a fence around your brain’Both women were tricked into the sex trade by their boyfriends, men who sold them a dream of money, love and security, who eventually became their pimps, they told CTV News Toronto.

“I wanted to have this loving family of my own one day and he basically sold me on that,” she added. “So I thought if I agreed to do this, we could have that life one day.”
Every day, thousands of teenagers and young women are being sold for sex in hotels and motels across the Greater Toronto Area, in what Toronto police say is one of the fastest growing crimes in the province – human trafficking.

Many victims are as young as 12, said Karyn Kennedy, president and CEO at Boost Child and Youth Advocacy Centre. “It’s shocking to see so many that are that age and that are getting involved in something like this at such a young age,” said Kennedy.
Some of the girls are physically abused, beaten by pimps, and too scared to leave. “It’s almost like there’s a fence around your brain,” Karly said. “I’m not physically locked in a room, but where am I going to go?”

These young women and girls are forced to have sex for money, sometimes several times a day, and then hand over all their cash to a pimp they are brainwashed into believing loves them. Olivia worked every day over the two years she was trafficked. She says there were thousands of clients. Detectives say the crime is growing because human trafficking is so lucrative. One sex-trade worker can earn more than $250,000 a year, but they don’t get to keep any of it because all the earnings go to their pimp.
“Even though I wasn’t keeping that money myself, I thought it was my money. I thought it was our money,” Olivia said. The Internet has also changed how these women were trafficked. According to police, their services were advertised on the classified website, backpage.com, in Toronto’s “escort” section. Most human trafficking victims are younger than 16, police say Yesterday, CTV News Toronto revealed a three year undercover child sex trafficking sting aimed at catching men who pay to have sex with underage girls and the people responsible for trafficking them.

This involves rescuing victims, identifying and charging those who traffic children; and identifying and charging those who attempted to purchase sex with children. “The problem is if we didn’t have a demand, we wouldn’t have to have a supply,” said Toronto Police Det. Sgt. Nunziato Tramontozzi.During operation “John2,” Toronto police have helped around 200 victims of human trafficking escape their pimps. Investigators say more than 60 per cent of these victims were 16 or younger. ‘They helped me’ Karly was one of the victims they found working in a hotel room. She says victim services and other agencies helped her get back on her feet. “They took me to the hospital,” she said. “They helped me get into temporary housing that was safe. Both Karly and Olivia work for East Metro Youth Services in Scarborough, helping girls and young women escape prostitution. “I just hope I can let people know they’re not alone, that there’s nothing to be ashamed of, this was done to you by someone else and it’s not your fault,” Olivia said.

I suppose one lesson is stick to independents and reputable agencies.

These girls would be marketed as "independents". Have you ever seen a backpage ad that says "Come fuck my girlfriend and I will arrange it"? Not many 18-21 year olds have the business, marketing knowledge to even know how to begin to post ads, pay backpage through bitcoins, rent hotel rooms, get burner phones etc etc.

And no guarantee with agencies either. I have met a few agency girls who told me that it was their boyfriend who suggested they start in the business to support their dream etc.

Very, very sad. I read/watched this story yesterday and I am really reconsidering this "hobby". I feel weird about being part of anything where someone is exploited, even if seemingly agreeable to it as these girls believed at the time.

Just increase the minimum sentences for living off avails of prostitution and pimping, and you'd decrease a lot of it.

Heck, bring back summary executions for all I care. That will really cut down on it

I would hate to think that Joy Smith is proved correct.

I find stories like this very distressing. The part that resonated was, “It’s almost like there’s a fence around your brain,” Karly said. “I’m not physically locked in a room, but where am I going to go?” For any woman or man that's ever been in an abusive relationship, or dealt with someone who had that sort of control and authority over you, this can be a horrible mental barrier and it's no wonder so many sex workers can't get off this path. But yes, these 'pimps' who actively recruit, groom and then take the money of these girls, they indeed are scum. One would really have to be inhuman to engage in this activity, let alone feel ok about themselves as a so called man.

These stories can indeed be quite depressing for one to read.
Even the ones that are not threatened or abused I figure there is some Stockholm syndrome going on too.
Women are more vulnerable to abuse from quite a young age within their family and then by strangers.
Abuse can often be traumatic and violent or it can be psychological etc.
Certainly the men who take advantage of vulnerable women are not only predatory but quite despicable.
I've seen some confessions of these women who got out of it though it was not easy.
In many cases they blamed the demand side of it ie Johns, hobbyists etc like ourselves.
So something to think about. Not the only reason I stopped hobbying, but one of the main reasons.

What about the Russian, Chineses, or Italian ones. Because you know..none of those cultures are big on organized crime.
Because of their culture, black pimps tend to be more publicly visible because showing off your 'ho's' is like wearing gold. Other cultures might be involved but you won't find them out in public bragging about it.

I think a large part of the equation is the girls themselves who are attracted to this lifestyle. There is a young white dancer who has been working in Loco for sometime now. When I first met her, she was complaining her (pimp) boyfriend took $36 K from her and kicked her out of her house - back to her mom's. She has repeated the cycle a couple times and one of the dancers told me that she has just started up with another notorious pimp.

I'm not defending pimps but there should be therapy for insecure / drug addicted girls who are left alone will seek out the pimp instead of the common perception the pimp is seeking her.

There is only one culture that has glamorized "pimpin" and "ho's" and "bitches" in the last 25 years and it's not Russian, Italian or Chinese cultures. Nor low life whites. For clarity, pimps come in all colours, but only one culture glorifies the sex trade culture. The language has become part of human culture and we wonder why these girls are lured by it.

Yes, we should put away the pimps for a long time.
And I'd like to see them have thier hands cut off.
I don't care if they are black, Russian, Asian, white, male or female, pimping is human trafficking. No one should ever be captive for sex, underage or not.
There was a thread on here where a lot of resources for helping ladies and ways to report trafficking or underage, but I can't find it. If a mod could make it available or easy to find, that would be nice.
A lot of talk about how bad it is, but not many doing anything about it.
What do you do when you see a girl who obviously has a pimp. Twice I've walked out and reported it.
What do the established Lady's do when they see a young girl with her pimp in the same hotel? Wouldn't it be nice if we could help each other in this community?

Im interested in helping out a girl who I think is being trafficked. I don't know if she's interested in getting help though. What can you do in that situation? She's not underaged either.

Unless she gets help on a bounce (between pimps) I have my doubts you can help ! The girl I'm thinking of in Loco would probably hold his coat as he beats the shit out of you.

Ask her if she wants help. If she refuses, nothing you can do. If he's hurting her call police.
But if she does want help, get her to a safe place first. If she wants out altogether, call Maggie's place.

He could try, but what if this guy is like Chuck Norris, and beats the shit out of the pimp (while holding his jacket for him)?

Replace the word "pimp" with "deadbeat boyfriend" and you're essentially describing vast numbers of sp's, yes, even ones that work for reputable agencies. It can take a surprisingly long time for even intelligent adult girls to figure out that supporting a guy financially until he gets his big record contract is a scam. In love, everybody plays the fool. Escorts are not immune.
