I'm the admin of my workplace.

I am planning a visit to China this year and would love to be able to look after things from China as I do from here in T Dot.

Any opinions from other travelers or admins who have experienced this need?

Let's say I communicated back to Toronto the one IP that I was at and allowed that one IP through our FW so then VPN and then RDP

OR

just maybe stick with Team Viewer?

Would either of these ideas just plain not work?

I was also looking at this BUT if we have to spend anything, it's just not worth it. https://www.arraynetworks.com/solutions-remote-desktop-access.html

OR just simply "No way José!" Not worth risking letting even me in from China.

I appreciate any time or thought you may put towards my question.

Thank you very much. :)

(I was reading this thread for a bit: https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1461909-would-you-let-your-users-remote-in-from-china)

Ask yourself this: if you're on vacation, why would you be working?
Better yet, have your employers signed off on this arrangement?

I'm not sure how to handle works from abroad and I've never worked as admin on company's computerized systems and servers.

You may want to check with people who work in multinational companies which have their people working in various offices around the world such as IBM, Microsoft, Google, GE, and etc. They should have very good knowledge on how to work and manage servers from abroad.

Unfortunately, most of Canadian companies which we work in are not multinational companies and don't have such capabilities. At most, they may have operations in nearby countries such as USA and perhaps Mexico if any. So that is not very far as in your case in China.

I know the Chinese government takes a dim view of the use of VPN's and recently banned the usage of personal VPN's. I would set the expectation that all your traffic will be monitored and suggest you take a "clean" system over there & have it wiped when you return. If you are there on business have your legal team consult on this matter with the hotel & the companies you'll be working with. I would refrain from connecting too or viewing *anything* not work related. Sites like Gmail, Youtube, Facebook are all blocked by the Chinese government (or where last time I checked). Do NOT under any circumstances visit porn sites or sites like Terb. Also, do not download and install Chinese social media like QQ or WeChat. These sites usually carry a payload.

**this advice is offered "as is"**. I'm not a cyber lawyer

If you take your personal laptop and bring it to China. There is no problem accessing TERB. YouTube and Gmail do not work in China. WeChat works on your cell phone from North America as long as you have a carrier like rogers which is also dependent on the plan. Company or Personal.

I think each of us should choose VPN Service Provider according to three parameters: quality of connection, price and security level. Don't neglect each of the three because otherwise you won't get the maximum benefit from your vpn.

I just returned from China. I used VPN 360 which is available from the Apple store for free. Worked well with no issues.

I used one of the VPN tools for similar reason when I was in Asia. No issues...it should work for you as well
