The Peel School Board approved Islamic sermons and prayers in schools, where students and preachers can pick whatever prayer they want in Arabic with no translations. Then they excluded a politician and media baron KEVIN JOHNSTON who opposed them, Then they refused to discuss the issue at their public board meeting. The parents went berserk. One man ripped a Koran and stomped on it, numerous people yelled about child rape and Muhammad, and the board ended up having to shut down the meeting. RiseCanada.com was there as observers and even we were surprised at the intensity.

While I can't say that I'm surprised seeing as there is strength in numbers and Islam is now the fastest growing religion in Canada, I am upset however, that the Peel District School Board caved in so quickly to the demands of this one very demanding, noisy, religious group.

All religions should be treated equally and as far as I'm concerned, no 'one' religion should be given 'special' status in a publicly funded school board. The taxpayers of Peel will also now have to shell out to pay teachers to provide extra supervision on Friday after school when Muslim prayers are held in school prayer rooms.

One doesn't see Sikhs, Hindus, Jews, Christians and or other religious denominations demanding such special rights and status in public schools.

This is ridiculous given that Mississauga has so many mosques and 'Islamic" private schools. If Muslim parents feel so strongly about this issue, why not have their kids enrolled in Islamic schools or attend services in their local mosques on Fridays?

Soon they will demand Sharia Law and will want boys separated from girls in the classroom.

You do realize it wasn't just white people right. That it's actually Hindu's as well leading the charge on this.

So you have brown people vs brown people.

Oh and where were you calling out these same muslims when they opposed the new sex ed curriculum due to its teachings about homosexuality. Is the Muslim community bigoted for opposing it?

Actually, Islam doesn't. State institutions are constitutionally obliged to "accommodate" all religions. This has been the law since the 1980's. Applies to Hindus, Jews, Christians, dog-worshippers and - against the wishes of some members of TERB - also Muslims.

Hindus really, really, really like Muslims, huh?

Muslims are entitled to express their opinions on the curriculum, just like any other opinion group. The curriculum passed anyway. But they were entitled to say they were uncomfortable with it. Why would you have a problem with that?

I have a problem with the boneheaded moron ripping the Koran. It's a display of a radical fuckhead as open minded as the radical Muslim fuckhead who shares the same values of tolerance towards Jews & Christians.

I'm not religous at all and it doesn't bother me. If a group of weak minded religious zealots need to gather in little circles to sing their particular religious version of Kumbaya to deal with reality - sing you little hearts out. From my perspective, it's like a bunch little kids arguing over the favourite superhero..

I like all the other protesters, including the Hindu's have an issue with a religion that segregates menstruating girls as unclean during prayer time in school property during school hours.

In effect the school is allowing misogynist teachings on campus. And by allowing it they are signaling their approval of it.

That's why it's an issue.

All the parents who oppose this should take their kids out of school and protest, until this is reversed.

People would be more comfortable with muslims if they didn't engage in the exact thing right-wingers fear they are going to do. I'm actually more angry with the way liberals are so willing to capitulate to a religious group because they are minority. This nation offers an extremely wide berth (ever find it funny muslims aren't heading en masse to islamic countries? There's plenty of them. Plenty). Practice religion on your own time. Easy to do. Nobody is going to lock you up .

The problem is that there is a CONSTITUTIONAL requirement for the schools to accommodate minority religions. Get it??!!! A CONSTITUTIONAL REQUIREMENT. So NO reversal. Ever. Because they CAN'T.

Unless segregating menstruating women is fundamentally against hardcore Canadian values - and (although distasteful to me as well), it isn't - they get to segregate women while worshiping.

,... "State institutions are constitutionally obliged to "accommodate" all religions",...but they DO NOT,...in public schools and government buildings.

This has been proven over the last decade in respect to Christians.

The ONLY religion currently pushing for special privileges, and NOT all Muslims as you have correctly noted,...is a certain faction of Muslims.

I wonder what would happen if a Christian community wanted to have their own schools and get money from our taxes for them. Oh Yeah! They already have that.

I do not agree with any religion wanting to have their "agenda" in our schools. However I do agree that ALL Schools, Colleges and Universities (Private, Public and Other) should try, within reasonable means, to accommodate those who have "religious" obligations to conduct prayers during the school day.

,...segregating women for what ever reason,...is fundamentally against hardcore Canadian values.

Women are actually allowed to go into a bar unescorted, through what ever door they choose now,...Canada advanced long ago past that backward thinking.

Its about time other cultures think about living in the 20th century,...don't you think.
