A friend of mine lost his Motor Vehicle license a number of years ago for DUI . He's about to get it back and is wondering if he will be allowed to drive a powerboat. He does have his Marine License. His vehicle is required to have Ignition Interlock installed, but is it legal for him to drive a boat, or a PWC.

He says that he's called a number of Officials from the Ministry of Transportation and Transport Canada but so far, nobody's given him an answer.

A Question to Perry Mason or Perry Mason types.... is a person allowed to operate a powerboat once their Driver's License is re-instated, provided they have a valid Marine License.

As long as he has his boat smart license he'll be fine. Im not sure if loosing your drivers license prevents you from driving a power boat anyway.

Mr. Deeds is correct. The Marine License (which is a ridiculous racket by the way) is entirely independent of a DOT driver's license. You can hold a Marine License without ever having learned to drive a car. But the rules about drinking and boating have gotten pretty tough, so he'd better play it smart.

You can get a dui while driving your boat and your driver's license can be suspended as well and this can also lead to having the interlock device installed in your vehicle too. This also applies to many other motorized vehicles, off road, boats, and non motorized as well, kayaks and just about anything and they all can lead to a driver's license suspension. While the interlock device is only installed in your motor vehicle, I would assume that if you are caught while boating, like in your friends case, that you would lose your license and would be considered a second (third) time offender. Which would lead to more severe penalties for him, one being the possible lose of the interlock device and therefore the ability to drive, which also leads to a snowball effect of legal fees, uber/taxis to get around and sky high insurance rates when he does get his license back.
