Hello Gentlemen,

It's Asian Nicole. I just came back from vacation. It was about one month long, which I got well-rested. I have missed you all! Can hardly wait to see you again! From now on, I am going to continue my European trip stories of last summer.

Vienna, Austria’s capital, lies in the country’s east on the Danube River. Its artistic and intellectual legacy was shaped by residents including Mozart, Beethoven and Sigmund Freud. The city is also known for its Imperial palaces, including Schönbrunn, the Habsburgs’ summer residence. In the MuseumsQuartier district, historic and contemporary buildings display works by Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt and other artists.

Hello Gentlemen,

Today, Vienna has the second largest number of German speakers after Berlin. Vienna is host to many major international organizations, including the United Nations and OPEC. The city is located in the eastern part of Austria and is close to the borders of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary. In 2001, the city centre was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Apart from being regarded as the City of Music because of its musical legacy, Vienna is also said to be "The City of Dreams". It is well known for having played an essential role as a leading European music centre, from the great age of Viennese Classicism through the early part of the 20th century. The historic centre of Vienna is rich in architectural ensembles, including Baroque castles and gardens, and the late-19th-century Ringstraße lined with grand buildings, monuments and parks.

Hello Gentlemen,

Vienna is known for its high quality of life. The Economist Intelligence Unit ranked the city first (in a tie with Vancouver, Canada and San Francisco, USA) for the world's most liveable cities. The UN-Habitat has classified Vienna as being the most prosperous city in the world, which analyzed 162 indicators in covering three areas: culture, infrastructure and markets.

Vienna regularly hosts urban planning conferences and is often used as a case study by urban planners. Between 2005 and 2010, Vienna was the world's number-one destination for international congresses and conventions. It attracts over 3.7 million tourists a year.

Hello Gentlemen,

Maria-Theresien-Platz is a large public square in Vienna, that joins the Ringstraße with the Museumsquartier, a museum of modern arts located in the former Imperial Stables. Facing each other from the sides of the square are two near identical buildings, the Naturhistorisches Museum (Natural History Museum) and the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Art History Museum).

When I was in Vienna, I had a chance to visit one of the museums--the Kunsthistorisches Museum. It contains numerous famous works by the Northern European masters, such as Bruegel's Tower of Babel, as well as an extensive collection of ancient world art. The Egyptian collection (Aegyptisches Sammlung) houses mummified forms, stone carvings, and the tomb of an Egyptian prince that was transported to Vienna and reassembled for Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. On the stairwell's roof are frescoes by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt.

Hello Gentlemen,

The monument of Empress Maria Theresa is situated in the middle of Maria-Theresien-Platz in Vienna city centre. Maria Theresa was the only female ruler of the Habsburg Empire.

Although she had a difficult start because of being female (she had to fight for her throne in the War of the Austrian Succession), she eventually ruled Austria and many other European regions (including, among others, Bohemia, Hungary, parts of the Balkans, and North Italian regions) for 40 years from 1740 to 1780. She was very religious (Catholic), had 16 children (among them the infamous Marie Antoinette of France), and was quite popular with the people she ruled.

Maria Theresa introduced many good reforms in the Empire, especially in finance, education, healthcare, and civil rights. Overall, Maria Theresa has been considered one of the best rulers of the Habsburg dynasty.

The Saliera is the only remaining work of precious metal which can be reliably attributed to Cellini. It was completed in 1543 for Francis I of France, from models that had been prepared many years earlier for Cardinal Ippolito d'Este. The Cellini Salt Cellar depicts a male figure representing the sea and a female figure that represents the earth. A small vessel meant to hold salt is placed next to the male figure. A temple-shaped box for pepper is placed next to the female figure. The salt cellar is made of ivory, rolled gold, and vitreous enamel.

On 11 May 2003, the Saliera was stolen from the Kunsthistorisches Museum, which was covered by a scaffolding at that time due to reconstruction works. The museum offered a reward of €1,000,000 for its recovery. The Saliera was recovered on 21 January 2006, buried in a lead box in a forest near the town of Zwettl, Austria, about 90 km north of Vienna. The thief, Robert Mang, turned himself in after police released surveillance photos of the suspect which were subsequently recognized by acquaintances. The sculpture is insured for an estimated approx. $68.3 million now.

Hello Gentlemen,

Sachertorte is a specific type of chocolate cake invented by Austrian Franz Sacher in 1832 for Prince Wenzel von Metternich in Vienna, Austria. It is one of the most famous Viennese culinary specialties. December 5th is National Sachertorte Day.

In 1832 Austria's minister of foreign affairs, Prince Metternich, ordered his court's kitchen to create a special dessert for a dinner to be attended by high-ranking guests. "Let there be no shame on me tonight!", he is reported to have declared. Unfortunately, on the day of the dinner the chief cook of Metternich's household was taken ill, and the task of preparing the dessert had to be passed to Franz Sacher, then in his second year of apprenticeship at the palace. The result was the magnificent chocolate cake devised on the spot by the 16-year-old trainee.

Sacher was born in Vienna, and he had two sons, Eduard and Carl. Eduard Sacher opened the Hotel Sacher in 1876, near the State Opera House in Vienna. The Sachertorte is said to be instrumental in spreading the fame of the hotel. The exact recipe as created by Sacher himself is a closely guarded secret.
