I know it's just a movie.

But I'm sure they did their research and boy oh boy, this was one cool cucumber to land this plane the way he did.

I've not seen the movie as it seemed implausible to make a 2 hour movie out of it, but I will look for it now.

I had the same thought, but would say it was well worth my time to watch. It does seem that they took great pains to be accurate, and the film has interesting things to say about media, celebrity, etc.

Most of all though it was just plain uplifting.

I haven't seen Sully yet but was reminded of the opening of this Ted talk by one of the passengers.

https://www.ted.com/talks/ric_elias

Imagine a big explosion as you climb through 3,000 ft. Imagine a plane full of smoke. Imagine an engine going clack, clack, clack. It sounds scary.

Well, I had a unique seat that day. I was sitting in 1D. I was the only one who could talk to the flight attendants. So I looked at them right away, and they said, "No problem. We probably hit some birds." The pilot had already turned the plane around, and we weren't that far. You could see Manhattan. Two minutes later, three things happened at the same time.

The pilot lines up the plane with the Hudson River. That's usually not the route.

(Laughter)

He turns off the engines. Now, imagine being in a plane with no sound. And then he says three words. The most unemotional three words I've ever heard. He says, "Brace for impact." I didn't have to talk to the flight attendant anymore.

(Laughter)

I could see in her eyes, it was terror. Life was over.

They did a good job with it, considering everyone knows the story. I wouldn't go to the theater for it, I'm sure its out on Dvd by now.

After seeing the movie, I read Sullenberger's autobiography. Good read, not only on the incident, but the airline industry as a whole.

True stories often make the best movies.
I lived through all of the 60's space program as a kid and teen. I can recall the real life drama of Apollo 13 like it was yesterday and yet whenever I see the movie on the schedule I will watch it again.

ditto re; anything JFK...I remember being sent home from school just after lunch, my dad getting home early....the thought that Nov 63 day was that this was the Russians' doing and was the start of World War 3.

Seabiscuit was another good movie based on real life events,

I think it is actually only 90 min or something like that. I read it was one of the shortest Hanks' movie

The movie is good (caught it on KODI).

I like watching Mayday and it was one of the episodes - see below:

I enjoyed the movie. Sully is a true professional dedicated to his craft. If only all pilots were like him. He trained all his life for that moment, and when it came, he was ready.

Watched this the other night with some friends and the best part was when Sully questioned the NTSB about the time he had to determine what was going to happen next, the look on the faces of the NTSB board was classic.
Good movie, not great, but the story is surreal.

The NTSB board scene was a Hollywood exaggeration, in real life they weren't so antagonistic. The movie invented that to have a plot. The initial NTSB investigation concluded he made the right decision without all that drama. While simulations did show an immediate turn could have worked the NTSB itself noted that wouldn't allow the crew time to follow the QFR engine loss checklist, which they did try to.

So the courtroom drama in the movie is fiction.

However the clip in post 1 seems to be word for word accurate to the true events, including how totally calm he was.

"15:29:28 RDO-1 we're gonna be in the Hudson.
15:29:33 DEP I'm sorry say again Cactus?"

That's right in the official log.

Sully asked the script writers to not use the real names of the NTSB investigators as he felt the script's depiction of them was so far off, negative and he did not want to besmirch the real people.

That in itself shows how classy Sully is in real life.

What the movie didn't touch upon was how he and his co-pilot had taken huge salary cuts over the years due to deregulation and airline mergers. The co-pilot had recently been demoted from Captain to co-pilot just to save his job.

Of all the people who I want to be the best at their jobs it is the pilots....cutbacks have led to less experienced but lower cost pilots sitting in the cockpit. As with the Q400 crash in Buffalo a few years ago that inexperience is one contributor to disasters.

On the flip side air fares remain quite expensive particularly if you are not lucky enough to be flying from hub to hub.
