Officials working to stop sex trafficking along the 401 corridor between Windsor and Toronto have noticed a "shocking" spike in the number of women and girls being trafficked out of London, Ont.

London is a middleground for johns moving women between highway hotels, said Det. Michael Hay, leader of London Police Service's newly created unit dedicated to helping women who are being forced to sell sex.
Human trafficking crackdown on sex trade across Canada yields 47 people charged, Human traffickers going unpunished in Canada, experts say "I think it's a huge issue," he said. "On any given day there are probably 90 sex trade workers working as escorts in London. I would estimate at least 25 per cent of them are being trafficked."

One of the biggest struggles the team faces is finding the women to help them escape, said Hay. In many cases they don't want to work with police, or can't. "Most of them, because of a trauma bond they have with their abuser, have a great difficulty opening up and telling us what's going on," he explained. That difficulty is made worse by the fact that johns often text message using apps that hide their phone number and are impossible to trace. "There are a lot of victims in London right now.," Hay said. "We are going to do everything we can to help everyone we can, but I think we're just scraping the surface."

Average entry age is 13:
Over the past 17 months the the London Abused Women's Centre served 490 women and girls, 159 of which were involved in human trafficking, said Megan Walker, the organization's director. The average age of someone who enters the sex trade is 13, added Walker. "The majority of them are anywhere in Ontario you can get to from the 400-series highways," she said, adding the number of women served by the centre is higher than ever before. "We've never seen anything like this... it's never been like this."

Help first, arrest later: According to Det. Michael Hay, his unit's primary goal is to help women and girls escape the sex trade and bring them somewhere they feel safe — laying charges is their second priority. The team has "saved" seven people since October and December of last year, according to the team leader. In some cases the team is even receiving tips from independent sex workers already working in the trade, Hay added. "We've done three john stings and charged 15 johns since October," he said. "As long as there's a market out there for it, there will be people in the sex trade who are being trafficked."

I'm all for stopping trafficking, not at all interested in paying pimps.
I've reported a couple girls who obviously had pimps. I walked away and told her to get help.
I don't know how but I think the established Lady's could help the younger ones get help?

Holy shit, that's the first time I've heard them say anything less than "the vast majority" are being trafficked! At least they're getting more accurate.

Absolutely traffickers need to be brought to justice. But I think most of us on here already know how you go about doing that.

I don't believe that the average age for people entering the sex trade is 13. I think they might believe that if these women ever had sex in exchange for something they would then have to consider themselves sex workers... but a lot of women do that and don't identify as sex workers. It's pretty normal for women to use their sexuality to get stuff. I was doing that long before I ever had sex. I find it really hard to believe. Maybe the people they are dealing with come to them at a young age, but I've known dozens of sex workers personally and I've only ever known one to be underage. She was really young. She's now in her late 20's and is a lesbian. It was unfortunate, but I really blame the system she was in for letting her fall through the cracks. Her mother was a crack addict, she had to do it to eat and she was essentially a street kid. She's so far from anything that I know about sex workers. The women I know are stong and independent and see it as something liberating because they like it and it gives them financial freedom. But this young girl was being exploited and had no other choice. I feel for her, but to lump us all into that category is ridiculous.

It would be a great public reminder to tell all how to do that.......

I lived in London for 25 years. In my opinion Megan Walker tends to blow things out of proportion when it comes to these things.

I think anyone forced into this needs to be rescued, and pimping needs to stop.

The claim that the average age for people entering the sex trade is 13 is not possible. For the average to be 13 there would have to be large numbers of 7 year olds to balance out those people who enter the trade in their 20s or older. This is obviously not the case. There have been some studies that only include minors working in the sex trade that have come up with numbers ranging from 13 to 15 but these statistics do not include those who entered the industry as adults. I saw an article by a reporter who pressed an anti sex work activist to specify where they got their statistics. When the reporter checked the study cited by the activist he found it was about the age at which people have their first sexual experience. This included things like holding hands.
