UNSC passes resolution demanding end to Israeli settlement building on occupied Palestinian land
Published time: 23 Dec, 2016 19:25
Edited time: 23 Dec, 2016 19:37

The UN Security Council has passed a resolution demanding an end to the construction of Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian territories after the US abstained from voting.
The resolution was introduced to the UNSC by New Zealand, Malaysia, Venezuela and Senegal on Friday, a day after Egypt withdrew reportedly under pressure from Israel and US President-elect Donald Trump.
Earlier, Trump and Israeli authorities also called on the US to veto the resolution. The document was eventually adopted with 14 of 15 UNSC members voting in favor. The US was the only nation to abstain from voting.
It is the first resolution passed by the UNSC on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in almost eight years.

On this I can agree, but I still don't understand what this is going to accomplish.

Don't worry, the Jewish Lobby will be back in power next month.
Doesn't matter, they won't be able to take the resolution back.
The resolution would be helpful for the ICC decisions.

Also makes a clear statement about the settlements all being illegal.
Every single one of them, and hopefully is enough to stop Trump from trying to put the US embassy in Jerusalem.

I'm sure that people will ignore that the resolution also demands the Palestinians stop incitement and act to PREVENT terrorism.

Stopping settlement activity will achieve nothing unless the Palestinian leadership embraces peace.

I'm sure Franky will also ignore that the resolution is strongly in support of a two state peace.

Sounds like you've given up all pretense of supporting international law regarding the illegal settlements and all the human misery their creation has brought to Palestinians. Not even the limpest condemnation of these violations of the Geneva Convention.

The Security Council sees things differently than you. They literally applauded the vote:

"Applause broke out in the 15-member Security Council’s chambers following the vote on the measure, which passed 14-0, with the United States abstaining. Israel’s ambassador, Danny Danon, denounced the measure and castigated the council members who had approved it."

You sound more like a minion for Danny Danon.

a) Israel isn't a party to the ICC.

b) it isn't going to have one iota of impact on whether or not the incoming U.S. administration decides to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

If the resolution is totally inconsequential, why the hoopla from Israel?

Obama should have shown some cahones 7 years ago.

But you said you were against the settlements.
I am an opponent of the settlement movement.
And you claim to support the two state solution.
Shouldn't you be cheering for this resolution and demanding that both sides abide by this UN SC resolution?

What happened with UN resolution related to 1948 Palestinian refugees ? 6 Million Palestinian refugees still waiting to return to their homeland
There are only a handful left. The six million are their descendants, not refugees. They get registered with UNRWA for welfare payments but that doesn't make them Israeli.

There is even creeping annexation in these resolutions.
First they demand Israel go back to partition.
Then to the 1967 lines.
Now they just demand that Israel take down all settlements built since 2001, though everyone built since 1948 is really in the same legal standing.

This resolution really was the last attempt to keep the two state solution alive.
If Israel does as they say and refuses to abide by the law there really will be zero hope of the two state solution left.

Which means its just time to support BDS and equal rights in the de facto one state.

BDS is a hate group that has been denounced for its lying anti-Semitic dishonesty. Only somebody utterly filled with hate would say it's time to support BDS. DISGUSTING!

Your support for this resolution is laughable because it contains two things you have repeatedly rejected. On the other hand, it's general statements mirror my own quite closely; Settlements bad, Palestinian terrorism and incitement bad, Two State peace good.

My only major complaint is that while the UNSC discusses things like this, real atrocities like Syria get avoided (as Ban Ki Moon says).

Those resolutions call for a negotiated resolution to the conflict followed by repatriation of any refugees who want to. Since the Palestinian governments reject the first part, the second part is a non-starter.
