Canada is not fucked, but there are some bumps on the road for sure. There are some serious underlying issues of govt sectors being over compensated vs private sector. But US full employment is a myth, and a strong US$ will start to hurt US exports and make Canadian exports cheaper. It also will be interesting to see how the free trade deal with the EU holds. Surely they will buy more lumber from Canada vs Russia. Also to increase the labour force Trudeau has put into place visa free visitors visa for Mexicans.

Canada will simply not be able to compete with the US on taxes. Trump has promised to drastically lower corporate taxes to get American companies to create more jobs in the US while our government will impose a job killing carbon tax, which is something Trump wants no part of. That alone will put us at a huge disadvantage for job creation, foreign investment and exports.

Not to mention Mexico.

I get around.
Trump has made a lot of promises. Hard to know how markets will react to his steady stream of 140-character pronouncements via Twitter. One thing I did pick up from that article is, next time I'm going to present a graph at work it will feature shiny, brightly coloured spheres, like this.

I don't know if they're supposed to represent molecules or planets or soap bubbles, I need to make a graph with those spheres. "As you can see, we are not moving the little blue guys as much as last year, while our sales of small green bubbles outside Toronto is expanding and should be given higher priority...Any questions?"

Also I learned a new word from that article: slowth meaning, slow or slowing growth. Need to try to work that into a conversation.

Matt,

That chart is a fancy, lovely, arty work of bullshit, whereby a fancy illustration shows very little information. The entire graph can be boiled down to this. Some cities will prosper, some will plop on their faces and some cities will be mediocre. It's bafflegab at its finest. Wizard of Oz smoke and mirrors.

Yes I checked out how to make bubble (and radar) graphs in Excel. It's just a way to graph or present 3 columns of data, and the individual bubbles can be any colour, texture or even image you want, so the bs can be piled on. For instance, you could make each bubble a different planet even if that is irrelevant.

We don't have the sub prime issues you have. Basically the bank won't loan money to people who can't afford it. Vancouver may see a leveling. Toronto perhaps in the condo market but the house market will be fine.
