Aside from starting pitching this team is old and tired, this doesn't look to be a slump more like they can't get it done, so now what?

1. Unless there is a cinderella run, Gibby is done along with the hitting coach imo, will the pitching coach stay, hard to say.
2. The outfield is awful, how many outfielders would you pick before you got to a Jay? Try to land a marquee outfielder, but how?
3. Bye bye Bautista, had a good run but time to move on.
4. As good as Donaldson is, his season was worse than last years.
5. Was never a fan of martin, but I guess he stays, who else.
6. Sign Edwin or go after votto.
7. Bullpen is relying a lot on two 40 year olds.
8. This team doesn't have a good mixture of young and veteran players like Boston does.
9. Shapiro might have another rebuild on his hands after Cleveland is blossoming.
10. The team as it stands is on the decline not the upswing like most of us thought.

Have to agree with almost everything, except your lamentation of Martin. He's been a BIG positive influence on the younger pitchers on this team, and probably the reason Happ is a 20 game winner. No one calls a game better than him.

The problem with this team isn't starting pitching... its LEAVING MEN ON BASE, and relying too much on the long ball. Sure home runs are exciting, and they do win games, but they also yield WAY too many strike outs and fly outs. They need some guy to just get hits!

So my list is:

  • B-Bye Gibby... and B-bye Jacoby
  • B-Bye Bautista, B-Bye Saunders, B-Bye Dickie, B-Bye Thole
  • Sign Edwin
  • Bring Votto home! He's a home town hero FFS!
  • Find some outfielders that hit for average and some relief pitchers

Edwin is price all over again, Boston will sign him for 30 mil.

I guess at 20 mil, is Martin worth it?

How to you get votto, he has a no trade and if he waives it they have nobody of any value other than pitchers, unless you do tulo and Goins if the reds would do that, then you have to replace tulo.

I don't understand the hate for dickey, he's a fifth starter who can log innings and get 10 wins, what more do you want from a 5th starter, other than you need a scrub on the roster to catch him.

I don't see us paying big $ for what is in essence a DH. Joey Bats and EE will both be gone. As a Jays fan I salute them for their service. I wish we could dump Smoak, this guy is useless at the plate. But the powers that be decided on 2 more years. I would also neglect to re-sign Dickey, Thole, Cecil, Feldman, Floyd, Barney. I'd exercise the '17 option on Grilli, he's a great clubhouse presence. I'd try to re-sign Benoit and Navarro for cheap. I'm on the fence with Saunders. It was a great 1st half of the season for him but man did he slump post all star break. I think his BA dropped over 40 pts. I'd have to look at the list of pending free agents but one of our priorities has to be a solid lefty in the bullpen.

Saunders only made 3 mil this year, his numbers were a pretty good return, could prolly sign him cheap but watching him and Upton strike out regularly would be frustrating next year. Smoak is a roster filler which teams need, will get 15 hrs per year. Pompey doesn't look like he'll amount to much.

The problem with the jays this year was they kept trying to go for the long ball instead of just getting base hits with runners in scoring position. Just so many games where they leave too many baserunners stranded hacking at the plate leading to fly balls and strike outs.

Or did other teams figure them out, they also look old and out of gas.

He was the league MVP last year, and you're unhappy he didn't do better than that this year?

A big issue with the Jays is replacement players for departures. They really lack positional prospect talent (and this was not even what was traded away last summer). Filling holes via the FA market is not cheap, or if its cheap you are really rolling the dice.

And then trading for players is tough because the Jays lack prospect equity and I suspect Shapiro/Atkins are not willing to give up prospects in a system that still needs reloading,

Shapiro could be kicking himself right now because he could have stayed with Cleveland a bit longer to celebrate the WS with them!
Or he's kicking himself because he could have done more at the trade deadline instead of being Mr. Cheapo.

Its too bad your buddy Anthopolus stripped down the farm system to one of the worst in baseball and then left town.

The farm system is a renewable resource.

Draft and develop well and within 3 years you have replenished your talent. AA knew how to work it.

Cleveland traded the farm to get Miller. Not sure if Cleveland can be good for much longer. Their prospect pool are depleted as much as the Jays.
