Let this be the official Auston Matthews watch/thread.

So far an impressive WCH debut 3 games 2 goals and 1 assist = 3 points.

This kid has talent and I stand corrected when I stated that the Leafs had a tough choice between him and Laine. As long as the Leafs add the right players to compliment Matthews, his talent will be wasted. I don't think that Lamoriello and Shanahan will do this, as they are too smart to waste an opportunity like this, especially while rebuilding.

There is plenty of young talent to compliment Matthews. Marner and Nylander. JVR is also great a line mate for Matthews.

I agree, the Leafs have some guys that could compliment him well, as long as they don't go back to their old ways and trade them away for wily veterans who had won at one time in their careers.

Marner and Nylander are skill players but small by NHL standards. Wonder how they will perform in the grind of a full season and hopefully the playoffs?

Leafs have drafted well but none of these kids have proved anything at the NHL level, it's one thing to look good in scrimmage games and pre season but the test will be when they start the regular season and will face seasoned players with far more skills than they've played against before. Even Mathews won't look so good, he's got no Crosby, McDavid or Marchand to play with.

Serious question!!!

What is with this Auston spelling? Don't the parents know it is supposed to be Austin?

Does he speak Spanish? If yes, the Spanish speaking Blue Jays would love him. (I still can't believe Buck Martinez can't speak Spanish.)
Matthews did play baseball and I think the Jays could use Matthews in the lineup tonight.

Same could be said about McDavid, Crosby and Marchand. They don't have Matthews to play with. :biggrin-new:

A few names to remember, Glimour, Gaudreau, Fluery, St. Louis. Give Marner time to fill out into his body.

The most interesting thing to watch this season will be development of Matthews, Marner and Nylander. I'd like to see at least two out of three make it as first line players. Hopefully by season end they will be in the run for the Calder trophy.

It's to denote that he's not a Texan. Stephen Fuller Austin was the Founder of Texas.

I can't remember the last time I saw a Leafs pre-season game. Nice to see Zaitsev fit in so quickly. They kept talking about his offensive skills, we didn't see it during the WC. We saw his defensive skills which were stellar, the only opposing defenseman who could stay with McDavid. Nylander is a chirpy type, I could see Auston thinking to himself, "Ok enough already". One question: Where was Shoshnikov?

Auston Matthews will be Leafs Captain one day. Leafs are not making the mistake the Oilers are making.
