I think Mathews and Laine are the new generation of Crosby and Ovechkin. Mathews being Crosby of course.
If you are talking about players drafted in 2016, Mathews and Laine appear to be the cream of the crop. When you are talking about top young players in the league do not omit Connor McDavid.

I dont really follow hockey, but having a Leaf tied for 2nd in goals scored is pretty amazing.

Could Toronto have a Calder Trophy winner in Matthews?
It's his to lose. Big market Matthews. Local and national media can't stop talking about him.

Laine might as well be playing in Uzbekistan.

Well in 1920-1921 Babe Dye of Toronto St.Pats (Before they were called the Maple Leafs) lead the NHL in scoring with 35 goals in 24 games.

The Big M, must have been 2nd in goals scored the year he hit the high 40's.

If the season ended today, I'd say yes, Werenski would be neck and neck.

With more than half a season to go, a lot can happen. Anyone of Matthews, Werenski, Laine or even Marner can win.

Media aside, he can't pull a Casper, he still has to produce by playing out the remainder of the season strong.

Absolutely a lot can happen, injuries and slumps being at the forefront of losing this award. It would be interesting to see two Leafs, Matthews and Marner being nominated. This would show that the current management team and coach are doing the right things to get this team back in contention for a run at the cup in the future.

Laine out with Concussion. Could come down to Matthews, Werenski and Marner.

It's as simple as that and many other rookies have lost their bid for a Calder because of the injury bug. Thoughts are that they will keep him out regardless, until after the all-star break.
Connor McDavid was also hurt in his rookie year.

Question: Should 18 and 19 year old kids be allowed to play a collision sport against grown men? That hit looked like something Matt Cooke (I know it wasn't Cooke) would do.

They would be safer if they only played 50 minute games. Less ice time means less chance to get hurt.

Maybe do what they do in MLB with young pitchers? Put young NHL players on a minute count. Noticed how the Jays put Sanchez on a pitch count so he doesn't get hurt.

And the Nats did that with Strasburg and he has been far from injury free.

Actually, there has been no documented evidence of this approach being effective. It is strictly intuitive.

I see nothing wrong with a 48 minute game plus a 5 minute overtime (if needed) and shootout (if needed). Basketball is a good example.

"In the United States, professional basketball refers to the NBA, which has games that last 48 minutes of regulation"

"In European professional games and FIBA, each game consists of 40 minutes of regulation"

If I were Commissioner I would also ban bodychecking between the two blue lines.
