This was brought to my attention recently and I thought it'd be good to share in case some of you are using this antivirus.

Avast is signing certificates (when you visit a site) as their own, ie a visit to Google and Avast takes the certificate from Google, resigns it as their own.

Somewhat quick summary of it all here (from a year ago). http://www.thesafemac.com/avasts-man-in-the-middle/

Now, not too long ago a woman had issues with her PC, started acting up and it was in the root list of "trusted certificates".

Avast may have leaked their keys by accident to the internetz. Which is not a good thing if the wrong people get their hands on it and naturally will use it for nefarious reasons.
Quite literally, you can have your identity hacked. Yes, this is very real.

Ironically, I installed Avast on a friend's computer recently, the thing was acting up and would only connect online in Safe Mode and I could open files in safe mode.
Long story short, uninstalled Avast, looked for trusted certificates (which it seemed like they were gone after uninstall) and sure enough her computer is working fine now.
Installed Sophos for now.

Just a heads up in case anyone is running Avast and has any problems and if you didn't understand this, it's okay, it's all a big fuck up to begin with.
But I'd be leery of Avast at this point.

Thanks, I don't like avast too aggressive. I tried free Panda and its small and it works well, you can also turn off the upgrade offers.

Np Enyaw. It is, I'm glad someone pointed it out to me, so naturally had to pass the info on.

Conil, how do you like Panda so far, that was one that crossed my mind, but Sophos beat it out for me.

I like it, its quiet, no pop ups doesn't seem to be hogging. It picks up pups. I know its not a big name but works well for me.
