Worst choke job I've ever seen! When you hold on to the ball for longer than three seconds you become predictable, the Swedes had plenty of time to adjust. At least Buffon stood in front of the press, Ventura ran to the nearest bomb shelter.

The Swedes showed the Azzurri how to play catenaccio. Of course the fallout has only just begun.

Sorry Von about the Azzurri it seems like the team just didn't want to go to Russia no matter what like the USA.

Don't know what the bookies odds are but I'd expect Ireland to be slight favourites as they are playing at home with the winner going through. Denmark however goes through if its a score draw.

To understand why France is among the favorites and Italy is out, just look at Kylian Mbappe vs Moise Keen.

Mbappe got his chance with Monaco when he was 16 and he's never looked back. Keen, who's considered the first generational player born in the 2000's, came up through the Juve youth system. For this season he's been loaned out to Verona, a club with no player remotely close to his talent. His confidence has been shattered.

There are other factors for Italy's decline but this is the most telling. Keen turns 18 in February, he will be considered an adult allowing him to hire an agent. He will probably end up in the EPL or la Liga.

Its not a decline, its peaks and valleys that every national team goes through.

Brazil went through it (2002 to 1014).
Germany went through it (2002 to 2010).

The "big" countries tend to spend less time in the valley though.
Italy is going through a little valley of their own right now.

It sucks, it hurts...........but you gotta go through it

Big football countries like Holland and Italy will eventually be in top 5 again, it's just a matter of time

Italy's decline can be summed up on one position, the trequartista. They haven't had one since Totti retired after the 2006 WC, since then nothing. Were he not such an undisciplined chump, Balotelli would probably have assumed that role. The line ended at Totti, before him it was Baggio, before him Antognioni and before him Rivera. Gabbiadini took to the role and played well - then Ventura took him off.

The Azzurri hit rock bottom while Serie A is reviving.

Italy and Holland are not in decline, they just hit a little rough spot at the moment, which they will quickly find their way out of that again

No worries

danmand, are Eriksen and Cornelius the starting forwards, that a potent duo for any national to face.

Atalanta vs Inter on Sunday, could be an upset.

Eriksend is billed as a midfielder and play master ( like Pirlo), and plays in that role for the Spurs. On the Danish National team he plays a bit more forward.

The sting of Black Monday still lingers, my support for The Azzurri exceeds any club.

Roma 2 Lazio 1
Sampdoria 3 Juventus 2

Can I dare to dream that Roma could win the scudetto in 2018? They have a game in hand and that match against Sampdoria will be critical. Napoli look great but they don't have the depth to see this run through. Inter have the advantage of not having European commitments. Juve may have been guilty of looking ahead to Barcelona, never seen them make so many defensive mistakes.

Sid is the best...but he kept his hair gel with Evanka Osmak, after lovely Caroline. It's official, Jackie is special.

And he's right, which highlights the love/hate relationship between the Portuguese and the Italians in this city. Ventura stuck around long enough to get his payout. Then FIGC Chairman Carlo Tavecchio got canned after UEFA Chief Gianni Infantino tore a strip out of him. The FIGC Board will probably get pinked soon.

Roma wins the Group of Death!

Monchi was criticized for selling Mohamed Sallah to Liverpool, with the $59 million he got Pellegrini and Gerson. Not bad for a player they initially paid $8 million for. When Roma played Chelsea, the announcer said that its inevitable that Pellegrini will replace DDR. What he didn't say was that, back in 2005, DDR replaced the current Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco. Possibly that's what they needed, a coach who played for Roma's last scudetto winner. At this point he is Europe's Coach of the Year.
