I think VR will have a massive impact on gaming and entertainment, not immediately but faster than most people realize. Sony will also release a VR headset in H1 2016 for the PS4 which will drive mass adoption and content creation.

I can vouch for the site buckling, took me 15 minutes to get my pre-order confirmed for March :biggrin1:

Oculus Rift Pre-Order ETA is Now June for New Orders

There’s been a serious demand for pre-orders of the consumer Oculus Rift since going live Wednesday, and if you haven’t thrown your credit card at Oculus yet, you may be waiting until as late as June to get your hands on one.

Oculus founder Palmer Luckey tweeted before pre-orders went live Wednesday that there’s “no chance of Rift pre-orders ‘selling out’ [and] we will keep taking pre-orders for a long as people want EVE: Valkyrie.”

This was however before a massive outpouring of support sent the pre-order queue back to June. The first wave of Rifts are due on March 28th to customers in over 20 countries.

oculus rift ship date

Luckey told Polygon in an interview that “[w]e sold through a lot faster than we expected […] I can’t talk about numbers, but we sold through in 10 minutes what I thought we were going to sell through in a few hours, which is one of the reasons the site was beginning to buckle.”

In fact, web traffic to Oculus’ store front was so heavy when the pre-order counter finally hit 00:00, the site went down for more than a few tense minutes.

There is a small silver lining in the mad rush for pre-orders though. Some customers “may see their ship date move forward as fraudulent orders are weeded out,” said Luckey. Customers yet to pre-order may not be so fortunate though, as the June ship date has held since this morning.

The price is pretty brutal at $599 USD. I just built a new PC in part because I was anticipating getting a VR headset in early 2016, but I can not justify the $599 USD price tag.

I will probably look to get a VR headset near the end of this year along with a new gen video card which is supposed to arrive Q2 or Q3 of this year. If the timing works out then hopefully I can get a second gen VR headset around $300 USD, and a new graphics card that can drive a VR headset at high settings for around $175 USD.

For new technology a $599 price tag is more than reasonable, but it is purposefully built just for one specific purpose. With something like the first iphone, it was a multipurpose product so it was easier to justify and you could show it off to your friends.

Also, the pre order for hardware is pretty stupid, especially since it is a 6 month wait and it is not like FB needs the money from pre orders to get the product to market.

They start shipping March 28th and they've not yet charged anyone's credit card.

just wait till next year, it will be way cheaper and there will be more selection of content and the vomit factor should be fixed. Consumer early adopters always lose money.

The best application of the VR headsets is having two people wearing the other's headset so that they see what they look like to the other. Fascinating research in that area exploring empathy.

I agree with you 100%

are you going to buy a nice high end Windows PC to use with your Oculus? Btw i think the HTC Vive is currently a superior product though 200 bucks more.
but that extra 200 gets you proper motion controllers and a front facing camera allowing you to use your headset for VR and AR

Wow, that would be fucking otherworldly!

There's no way I'd drop $900+ CDN with tax without first trying out a rig for an extended period of time. Weren't these things supposed to retail for about $300USD?

Interesting but I'll pay more attention when the pornos come out. My guess is that is when volume increases and prices plummet.

I'm so glad I don't game. Only had one game on my computer and stopped playing months ago when it kept saying I was entering the wrong password. Good job EA. lol
