Rather, with deference to any statisticians out there, it was reported that by four days ago, so many tickets had been sold that 90 percent of all the possible combinations had been sold, by last night it was probably even a greater percentage.

Also heard a professor of mathematics on the local news who said that while purchasing multiple tickets does increase your odds it does so in such a minimal way that even spending over a million dollars on tickets only increased your odds to less than 50-50. His advice was purchase one ticket and dream.
Exactly what I thought; that the majority, if not all, of the possible combinations could have been in play.

About buying multiple tickets and you increase in chances... Totally agree that buying extra tickets increases your chances (e.g. buy two tickets doubles it). However the difference in probability in 2 vs 1,000,000 tickets etc., is 1 in 146,000,000 or 1 in 292; many of the available outcomes don't favour you. Not to mention the cost difference. His advice of 1 ticket and dream is kinda how I deal with Lotto Maxx. I don't usually buy multiple tickets (just one), but if I do buy more, never more than a total of $5 to $20. The odds and non-jackpot-pay-offs are really low.

Just to give you some perspective, in California alone, a large but one of 50 States, the sales were $179 million (or 90 million tickets). I'm sure the other 49 had no trouble in buying more than 290 million tickets.

The U.S. and Canada have a tax treaty such that you can basically write off the tax you have to pay in one on the tax you have to pay in the other (obviously only in the country of primary residence). As usual, if this becomes an actual issue in the future consult a lawyer specializing in tax issues - pronto!
I had to Google it. www.refund management.com will recover the U.S. taxes for you.

A few years ago one of my co-workers won at the Vegas casino and he wanted to know how to get the 30% U.S. taxes back.

In Texas the sales were $100 million (around 50 million tickets - some people may have picked a powerplay option).

Ah, Gambling (and presumably Lottery) winnings are not taxed in Canada for non-professionals (Boy is that ever a sweetheart deal). I was working on the basis that it was taxable and therefore you were offsetting taxes the way you do with most income.

As you can tell in the U.S. gambling and lottery winnings are considered taxable income.
Typically you don't get the tax you have pay to the other country back, you just aren't taxed twice because you can deduct the tax paid to the other country.
