Turns out the men who sought the girl through backpage.com were actually talking to the police and when they arrived at the hotel, they found police, cuffs in hand.

Det.-Sgt. Casey said he’s not concerned about detailing exactly how police caught these men because he considers it a “warning” to the men who hire prostitutes.

“The person you are texting may be a cop,” he said.

Looks like the cops were targeting men who were targeting underage girls. Surly they have more to do than go after adults in consenting activities.

It seems like a sensible application of the new laws. If the police use the laws to target men seeking under age prostitutes, then I think its a good use of resources. If any man is texting with a girl on backpage and the girl identifies herself as under 18, this should only have one ending - abort mission! For men seeking underage girls, they get what they deserve. I'm guessing there is enough work in tracking down these types of johns that it would be surprising if the hunt expanded beyond this scope. If johns start getting busted for seeing well reviewed providers that are of legal age, then I will reconsider my opinion.

Read the article. They targeted and arrested Johns too.
Why? It won't hold up in court. Waste of Judge's time. Underage prostitution case will stick in court plus makes better headlines in the news. But I still be careful and I stay away from BP.

"Those who pleaded guilty were handed prison sentences between two and seven months, along with years of parole."
People are going to jail because of this law now.
Scary stuff.

Yes, it's targeting guys who would be OK with seeing someone under 18 (based on previous articles, it's not clear if these guys were specifically looking for someone underage.. or were just simply thinking with their cocks when their brains should have been telling them to abort). But will LE stop there?

They are focusing more on the ones seeking underage girls, but all Johns are targets.

okay so if I'm in the room, before I hand over any money, if I ask the girl to flash her boobs, would an undercover cop flash her boobs? would this be a way to determine if the girl is a cop? It's my understanding a cop would never flash her boobs, is this correct? If she did, that would be entrapment, and cops in Canada cannot use entrapment.

The whole Bill C-36 is entrapment and won't survive the first constitutional challenge.

Your place!!
They way I see it, stay away from those advertising 20 and under. You never know whats going on. Of course I'm over sixty so that age is a little young in my books anyway.

Oh boy. Djedi, ur drama.... It was a direct punishment for seeking underage girls. Not for seeing an sp of age. Sheesh.

Entrapment is most certainly legal in Canada.

Not sure how it works in Canada, but in America showing up for an appointment is considered intent. And entrapment defenses only work if you can prove the cops lured you into committing a crime you would not have otherwise committed. Since you planned to hire a prostitute and this one just happened to be a cop, they have you. Bottom line is most of these "prove you're not a cop" things don't work. It's best to stick with well-known providers, reputable agencies, and nice hotels.

MPA is correct, entrapment is legally accepted in Canada.

Applause should go to the cops for using C-36 in taking these predators of underage girls off the streets. While there will be those who bemoan the use of C-36 in any way and that they should be targeting the pimps themselves, who lure these girls into doing this. They are taking the route of taking the customer out of the equation and letting it out there, that way these predators of young girls will be wary in trying to procure the services of underage girls in the future.

.
As far as I know, there's no Canadian written law specifically allowing entrapment by law enforcement. It might not have been successfully used as a defence in prostitution cases but it has not yet been used as challenge against c36.

You just can't rule out the possibility of a successful challenge.

While you are correct about written law allowing the police use of entrapment, it is a recognized means of investigation, as long as the police follow simple rules and don't cross the lines of what is acceptable.
