Spoiler alert.

Vikings is back for Season 3, this is another show that I tolerate commercials for. They got me right on season one by getting the lore right. The history is so rich that they could easily extend this show for 10 Seasons all the way to William the Conqueror. Eventually Ragnar Lothbrook will expire, will the public be ready for a visibly handicapped central character?

Homegrown production company Take5 has now established itself. This is their second hit show after The Tudors. Unlike Shit Media, this Toronto based entity is the little company that could.

So I did a background check and found out that Ragnar did not sack Lindesfarne. The show jumped two generations, since the Norwegian line that perpetrated the raid died out. King Horik is an actual historical character, he deposed the Norwegian line that initiated the move west. He underestimated the strength of his rival Ragnar and was eventually killed. King Eckbert is also historically correct and he did look for compromise with the Norwegians. He caught a break when Ivar the Boneless turned his attention to Ireland, leaving Wessex and Cornwall as the only remaining independent Saxon Kingdoms. Ivar's son Guthrum attempted to finish the job but met with a formidable adversary in Eckbert's son Alfred the Great.

Northern England still held semi - allegiance to Scandinavia even after the Norman Invasion. That would come to end with Edward I "Longshanks" of Braveheart fame.

For the sake of a damn good show they are playing fast and loose with history on another angle. Rollo was the Viking chieftain who attempted to take out the Kingdom of the West Franks. He sailed up the Seine and put Paris under siege, the newly crowned Capetian King sued for peace. In return for lifting the siege, Rollo was given Normandy as his personal fief. Rollo was the grandfather of Guillaume the Bastardo or as he is known by his English name William the Conqueror.

SPOILER ALERT:

So now the stage has been set. Since we don't know how Ivar the Boneless survived to adulthood they went with a Nordic parable that Goethe and Schubert made famous. The Wanderer arrives at Kattegad and takes away his pain, as payment he exacts a heavy price. But I'm heartbroken, gorgeous Quebec actress Jessalyn Gilsig is sacrificed for the greater good. Getting Kevin Durand to play The Wanderer was brilliant, you need an imposing figure to make the angle work. Up till now I considered Athelstan superfluous to the story. His part in the narrative is now clear, he is the father of Alfred the Great.

Aurvoir Jessalyn, I so love thee:

No. Just until Edward the Confessor around 1000 AD. He succeeded Cnut who ruled England and - IIRC - Denmark and Norway.

Yes on paper that would be true but Northern England never fully accepted the Norman Kings. A full scale rebellion broke out in the mid 13th Century. They even managed to have the King imprisoned in the hope that Magna Carta would be used to set up a stronger Parliament. But the King's son (Longshanks) was a cold blooded warrior and military leader. He laid waste to what was until then Northumbria, breaking the link to Scandinavia.

From what I've read, there's no agreement that Ragnar as portrayed in sagas even existed. Outside sources have a bunch of guys reportedly Ragnar's sons but many historians feel the Ragnar myth is an amalgam of a number of people.

SPOILER ALERT 2

She asked to be written out of the series so she could spend more time with her family. If that's true, I'd be pissed off if I was the producer. They seemed to be building to some kind of treacherous plot that now gets dumped.

Not necessarily.

Take5 is working on a pilot called Evil Men. She will be the co-lead along with Parminder Nagra (Bend it Like Beckham, The Blacklist). The treachery angle is being worked toward Lagertha, there is a reason why Ragnar has to remain dominant.

Some of you may disagree, imho Vikings is superior to Game of Thrones. The main reason why is that it doesn't use a fast and loose army of the dead as a plot device. Peter Jackson did the same thing with his McLOTR.

Josh Donaldson makes his acting debut and gets a five minute cameo. For obvious reasons, he couldn't take part in The Great Heathen Army....God help us!....I don't think he can.

Again they are condensing legend/history. Historically, Bjorn Ironside doesn't take part in Ivar The Boneless's invasion of Britain. His role in history may be more significant. He sailed into the Mediterranean and rattled the cage of the Moorish Kingdom of Spain, briefly taking Mallorca. It can be claimed that he started The Reconquista.

Gorgeous new character Margarethe, played by the lovely Ida Neilsen.

Katheryn Winnick is from the same neighbourhood where Paul Coffey grew up (Westway - Islington).

I was hoping that The Dark Tower would help her transition into films, it was a piece of crap. In S4, she has a rather merciless way of dealing with conspirators.
