"As a political act FIX is an urgent and just and heartbreaking film.
As a work of art it expands the known limits of human nature..."
-Michael Ondaatje

Opening Night: Thurs October 16 (The Varsity)
Fri October 17 to Thurs Oct 23 (Carlton Cinemas)

FIX: THE STORY OF AN ADDICTED CITY is a documentary which reveals the surprising and startling human drama behind a dramatic campaign in Vancouver to address the city's notorious open drug scene. FIX continues its national tour with an opening week of screenings for Toronto audiences October 16 to 23, 2003.

Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell and former Mayor Philip Owen will attend the premiere and join Toronto Public Health's Liz Janzen and Dr. Patrick Smith of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health following the screening to lead a community forum discussing the drug situation facing both cities.

For two years director Nettie Wild and her documentary crew delved
into the alleys and politics of Vancouver's drug scene where street
level drug users forged an unexpected alliance with Philip Owen, the
city's conservative mayor. It is a high risk drama that cost the
mayor his job but galvanized the birth of a social movement.

debate and discussion about drug use, harm reduction and the options
for Toronto. Toronto health professionals and outreach workers will
be joined at each forum by central figures in FIX including Philip
Owen (former Mayor of Vancouver), Ann Livingston (founder of the
Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users - VANDU) and Dean Wilson (past
president of VANDU.) Toronto's public health community sees FIX as a
compelling case study about one community's efforts to build a harm
reduction strategy. It supports FIX screenings as a helpful tool for
Toronto to initiate discussion around the development of its own drug
strategy
