My Driving Rant

Why ? Why is it soooo easy to get a drivers licence ?
It only leads to idiots behind the wheel.

I have been driving since I was 16 legally with a licence, 14 if you count when I actually began taking the car out(with parental permission) on my own, where the cops could not touch me.
I have always been a good driver(yes, in my own opinion). I have been involved in three accidents, two involving other cars.
Back to the point. I have been thinking about this for months, making a post about the terrible drivers in this city. It is not only just uncourteous, but some people are just plain stupid. Scared and/or inexperience only goes so far before you have to say 'this person is an idiot and should not be operating a motor vehicle anywhere much less within a highly populated area such as a major city'.
For instance there are three lanes(in each direction) on a road. Two lanes have cars in them with three or more in each. Guaranteed when they hit a red light one or two will slip into the open lane, not complaining ... yet. So you figure since they made that last second jerk into the open lane that when the light turns green they are going to go a little faster then the other cars. Not talking NASCAR fast or anything, just five or ten kms faster. Nooooo they go the exact same speed as the other cars. OK, so the driver must want to turn in the next block or so. Again, Nooooo they keep on going and going making sure no one can get by who may ACTUALLY WANT TO GET TO WHERE THEY ARE GOING BEFORE SUMMER ARRIVES !
There are also the morons who speed up when they think you are going to change lanes into the lane they are in and again do not pass the slow car. This is especially frustrating on the 401 and like highways. Why do you have to slow others down ? I do not understand why you want to frustrate another driver only to have him or her now driving beside your car getting more and more angry.
You also have the clowns who are on a major city road, in heavy traffic, putting along looking for an address. Totally oblivious to the headaches they are causing around them.
I do not even want to touch on the parking lot idiots.

Whew ... rant over.
Thanks for reading, please vent if you feel the need so I know I am not alone.

Or how about those will really slow reaction time on an advanced green light knowing that only a couple cars get through. Or slow reaction times on most green lights and when you honk at them to get going you get flipped the bird for your trouble.

I am also utterly amazed at the utter chaos that ensues on the roads when it rains or snows. Heck we live in Canada, we should know that anytime after November 1st that we can get snow. So adjust your driving for the weather. I think what is needed is an alarm clock that is tied into the weather forecast and when it has snowed overnight or is raining a few hours before the alarm was set, it should reset itself 45 minutes earlier to allow the extra time needed to get to where you're going on time.

The whole driver testing is a farce. There should be extra licenses for driving at night, in the rain, in the winter, etc. It's along the same lines of commercial drivers require extra licenses for large vehicles, air brakes, hazardous materials, etc.

Cheers

that could work. would put a serious dent in my hobbying budget though
You'd be chasing the babes away. They'd be fighting over the opportunity for a ride.

It has a 200 mile range and gets 35 mpg. That might help a bit with your cash flow. In TO it would probably be of some interest. I believe that in Alaska, 2/3 of the adult population have their pilots license so, meh

Can someone explain the new trend of buses and trucks in the fast lane. Not going into the express, not passing anyone, just driving along i the fast lane going just over 100 because they can't even get their fat asses going 120. LOL
while i can't defend trucks in the fast lane as that is against the law unless they have no other choice. i guess you missed the passing of the law where trucks got speed limiters put on them so they cannot go faster then 105 kmph. now that is not canada wide that is only in ontario if that makes sense. i would also like someone to explain to me why a car should not have that same speed limiter put on it.

if i a tractor with a trailer is not safe at speeds over 105kmph then a car is not either. also are you aware of the rules and heavy regulations truck drivers are under ?

I think you need to chill. With nervous disposition like yours, you're not as good a driver as you think you are.

I see people like you, all grimaced and angry in their metal boxes. Try to relax, life is easier.

There is scientific proof that the worst drivers are in Brampton but we are not allowed to say so.

As one who commutes across the GTA 4 times per week, you see all sorts. Generally late at night after the bulk of the rush hour (8-9 pm) the most dangerous drivers are the speeders. They swerve from lane to lane without signalling and/or scream up behind you and flash their high beams (understandable if one is hogging the left lane). On the other hand, when traffic is busy and/or heavy, the slow drivers are the most dangerous mainly because they are too hesitant and are afraid to change lanes.

Some trends I have noticed while driving the GTA (401, 427 & QEW):

* Heading west from Oshawa - Passing Stephensons Road at 5:30 am is smooth sailing through to Hamilton (60-90 minutes pending accidents/construction)
* Heading east from Hamilton area: 12 - 2 pm = 60-90 minutes; 3 - 7 pm = 90 - 120 minutes, longer if it is raining/snowing. In the summer Fridays are a write-off (leave at noon or 10 pm)
* QEW east in traffic: Inside lanes up until Ford drive, then take the left lane until you hit traffic, then middle or inside lanes.
* 427 north in traffic: Left lane up until Eglinton, then get to the right and take the collector up until you reach the 401. Stick to the inside lane as you merge onto the 401 and ride it as far as you can.
* 401 east at the 427 in traffic: Stick to the inside lane. Keep an eye on the message boards/radio for accidents. Take the first collector and keep on the inside lane. It moves a little faster than the express. After a km or two move the the outside lane and stay there until the next transfer. At the transfer move to the right hand lane and bleed it as far as you can then merge into the express. Stay in that lane until the next transfer and then move two lanes to the left (you want to stay in the express, but avoid the merging traffic from the collectors). Keep in the middle or inside lanes until you reach the big hill going down to the DVP. Move to the passing lane and ride it out as far as Whitby. In Whitby, move over to the inside lane and once the collectors and express lanes merge, get to the far right and ride it out right up and to Salem. After Salem, make your way to the left lanes and ride it out through Oshawa.

lol +1
and they do suck at driving, even when there is no snow on the roads. I am scared to think about how bad it's gonna be when white flies start flying

more importantly, or at least more on a practical level: I understand that there is an ipad/iphone app that shows traffic cameras live in GTA?

is it currently the best way to check for jams?
satellite radio does not seem to have this stuff for Toronto

There's this interactive map: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/traveller/trip/map.shtml?ll=43.40405,-79.604149&z=10
for your desktop, but I don't know of the corresponding i-app. I would think the MTO would have created one.

Hope this helps.

Brampton has highest crash rates in Ontario: AllState study

TORONTO, Ont. - Drivers are more likely to get into a car accident in Brampton than anywhere else in Ontario, according to a study by AllState Insurance.

In its second annual "Ontario Safe Driving study, which ranks 50 communities, Belleville had the lowest frequency of crashes, while Brampton had the highest.

The study also found places with the highest collision rates were all within a 45-minute drive of Toronto.

"Clearly, GTA obviously has a lot of people, a lot of vehicles, more opportunity for collisions to occur than say in smaller communities. So certainly that plays into it, but beyond that, others can speculate as to other reasons that might cause that to happen," said Tony Irwin, official spokesperson for Allstate Canada.

Ajax had the second highest collision rate, followed by Maple and Thornhill.

Toronto ranked better than the 905, placing fifth worst out of the 50 communities that were studied.

Yup, the good citizens of Brampton are the worst drivers and probably pay the highest insurance rates.

Disclosure: I do not reside in Brampton and try to avoid going there except for CB.

Yeah but sometimes the poor roads and hills-blind spots-could be part of the problem. Same with income if lots of people drive worn out cars with poor brakes/steering.

Just saying.

Moving the clock back to gain an extra hour of darkness doesn't help either. Who was the genius that thought about moving the clock back an hour? Ridiculous!
