Direct is back up. Cost is about $150 for 3 months. If your a techie you can probably steal the signal yourself.

Is Direct up with a card or FTA? If it is a card, is it all open PPV etc? I think what some people have is a subscription with Direct and because they are allowed to have a few extra cards/receivors they sell them. If it is completely open then they have cracked the Nagra 2 encription and we are all in business again!

You're mixing up DTV (Dave) and Dish Network (Charlie). Dave is still down and there is no fix for the P4 or P5 card yet. Nagra 2 does not apply to Dave. Yes, you can subscribe but that will not get you access to PPV and/or porn.

Charlie was down temporarily when Nagra 2 was implemented. After about a week a fix was found and I've been watching free PPV and porn without problem. I would recommend a cardless FTA box such as Fortec or Coolsat. They're about $2-300 and you can find files to flash your box all over the net. Doesn't need a card and easy to use.

That's what I thought about Dave ...that people are just getting a subscription in the US and selling their additional cards. They are not open ...no PPV, Porn etc but with Charlie you get it all with a FTA. I thought Dave was a different version of Nagra 2 encription. There is no Dave completely open now so don't be fooled. I have been a member of ultimate testers for about a year and they have all the free fixes and sell the units too. They are the most reliable that I have seen and warn about fake fixes.

The Dreambox DM7020 sells for over 500. Don't forget these boxes can become obsolete in a matter of months. Can someone say how long FTA Charley/DISH will be up for ?

Yes they are expensive but the Dream Box runs on Linux 'open' source and is the box all the hard core satellite hackers in Europe use. It's made in Germany and is a quality receiver. It was the first FTA to be decoding Nagra-2. Being Linux open source means just about anyone out there can write programs for it... I even have mucked around with some scripting on it.

OK so say Charlie in the future turns on an unknown ASIC within his cards... that would kill the FTA's however the Dream box could run with a card and take advantage of the cards ASIC since the Dream Box has 2 ISO7816 card readers and support for an internal embedded SIM card, more Ram, etc... having access to the Net means it could receive instant key updates and run card sharing with a paid sub... The Dream basically has so much extra onboard hardware to support so many other possibilities of future changes I think it was a good investment.

Dishnet Freeware

In case anyone is interested, N2 Freeware is out for Dishnet using a Rom10. I have it running on a 3100/301-10 using a Rom10. Nothing free for Bell, Atmega, Rom2/3/11 yet.

The Dreambox DM7020 is selling for about $700+,there are alot of receivers out there now. Like the Pansat 2700a or the Coolsat for about $250 and the Azria 750CX that is going for $300 ...
N2 Freeware should be out soon for the other test cards using the same ideas as presented in the Rom10 freeware written by Penga. No need to buy a FTA anymore, just use whatever you were using on Dishnet before.

I'm told Azria is somehow associated with the infamous Blackbird FTAs (with the built-in self destruct code). If that's the case, it would be good to stay away from them. Then again Pansat do the same thing?

Edit = Tomico has just released working N2 freeware for Atmega (Nov15)

If we could predict the future and answer questions like this, I could retire as I would have made a killing on the stock market. How can anyone answer this?

Charlie has not implemented full Nagra 2 yet. They have an interim measure in play now. For those who are testing, notice that you do not get all channels. A few are still blacked out or scrambled. It's only a matter of time before the next phase is implemented. When - your guess is as good as mine.
