WANTED: Web design mentor!

Hi :)

I want to learn all the elements of website design! Flash, cold fushion, Flash, Javascript, CSS, PhP, HTML, XML, etc.

I'd love to learn at a quick pace...anyone care to teach me or at least point me in the direction of a great design school here in Toronto?

What do you want it for?

If you want to set up your own site, you really don't need Php or Coldfusion or anything like that, because those are only needed if you want to sites that require constant updating to the database, example this site or a dating site etc..

First learn the basics like HTML and CSS and then you can progress to creating dynamic websites.

And if you want to "design" websites as opposed to doing the programming and development work, you should be looking at learning the Adobe suite of products like Illustrator, Photoshop etc.. which is really more graphics design and not development work.

If you are just doing it for your personal learning and satisfaction, that is great. But, if you want to do it to create your own site, it is a lot of effort when you can get the site done by someone else real cheap and much faster.

Too many people confuse the difference between web-coding and web-design. Coding is much easier, you get a book, do some trials, you're done.

Actual web design, requires the knowledge of aesthetics, web ergonomics, web psychology. There are 4-year courses offered at many universities for this. The one I took was "Web Publicity" and it doesn't even touch the aesthetics, for that I took graphic design, another 4-year course.

So kindly, don't mistake the two.

from what you have listed, you are mostly concerned with the front-end (visible parts) of web design... not worth the time if you are simply looking to set up a website for yourself.

if you are still interested, your best bet is to pick up a book that covers Macromedia Suite. it should get you started on the subjects you listed above.

Try this:

Online html schoolin

and this:

HTML KIT

and this:

CSS

As for Flash I just suggest getting Flash MX and going through the tutorials. You can also try Swish which may be more beginner friendly.

I learned on my own. Started with HTML, then on to CSS, then Flash and a little Javascript. I could show you some basics to get you started. Importantly you should understand that web content should not only be visually appealling but quick loading, easy to navigate, and comprehensible as well.

P.S. Don't use tables, use CSS instead.

Would be willing to lend a hand

Hi Vanessa,

Though I am only am amateur web designer myself (I've designed a few basic sites over the last 5 years for friends), I have had a long history with graphic design (approx. 10 years), I do art as a hobby so I have a decent aesthetic sense, and I can help you code just about anything your interested in except PhP, haven't learned that one...

PM me if you'd be interested in knowing more and we can discuss the matter further.

Regards,

Raven
