I found this article from the Toronto Sun to be somewhat amusing. It reminded me of the first time I went to an incall massage. Before the session I noticed she had some books on psychotherapy. After it was over, she proceeded to give me this big Esalen-style hug. I remember thinking, WTF did she think she just did? I suppose 'the healer' idea gives the provider some additional meaning for the sexual act but who gets cured? And of what??

'You're part therapist, part healer'

The sex industry isn't just about sex -- sometimes it comes down to, of all things, a good conversation.
Speaking on the phone from her Toronto home, one career escort recalled at least a few wayward husbands unloading about their obviously problematic marriages.
So after hearing the client out, sometimes she would offer advice. Sometimes it worked.
"I've had one or two wives actually call me up and thank me," she said matter-of-factly, declining to identify herself.
Spend a few minutes chatting with Toronto's sex workers (not publicly for the purposes of prostitution, that's illegal) and they'll tell you it's not just about turning tricks.
"My clients' number one motivation is not sex," said another escort. "The number one motivation is that they want companionship."
"I find that the majority of my clients are interested in everything but intercourse," agreed Anastasia Kuzyk of the advocacy group Sex Workers Alliance of Toronto. "You're part therapist, you're part healer." [snip]
