watching the news last night - saw something about 'at home -hiv testing kits' to become available in canadian markets within a few years.

apparently the kits will be similar to the tests used by diabetics to test their blood sugar levels ...

i did a search and came up with a european company that advertises ' one minute tests' for the "Detection of Antibodies to Human Immunodeficiency in Human Whole Blood". (Precursor to AIDS). Apparently, it is approved for sale in the European Union. see their web page: www.1-minute-hiv-self-test.com

Has anyone been following this development? This is the first I have heard of this ... though I have been aware at the 'hiv testing kits' in the US that require lab testing.

Easy To Use
The 1 MINUTE HIV SELF TEST is very simple to use, requiring only a few easy steps. A single drop of whole blood, obtained by finger-stick, is used in the test. The 1 MINUTE HIV SELF TEST comes in a convenient single-use package, containing a complete test kit, a lancet for finger sticks, an alcohol swab, a bandage and complete simple instructions.

Low Cost
The 1 MINUTE HIV SELF TEST is highly cost-effective. It allows instant home testing and eliminates the need for expensive lab visits, blood draws, storage and transportation of specimens and delays in reporting results. You know immediately !!

Fast
No waiting for for days for the lab results to arrive! Results are available in 1 minute or less.
.
Self Administration
The 1 MINUTE HIV SELF TEST has been carefully designed to be self administered without the need for professional assistance, and it provides instant knowledge of your HIV status.

Private
The entire test can be conducted in the privacy of your own home and there is NO public record of the results.

- IMPORTANT INFORMATION -

FDA Approval
The 1-Minute HIV Self Test is approved for sale in the European Union. However, You should know that regardless of any claims you may read to the contrary, the United States FDA (Food & Drug Administration) has never approved any real self test for HIV and refuses to do so on the grounds that they are concerned that a positive result should be immediately followed by personal counseling. A positive result from a laboratory in the U.S. could become a public record (by being reported to the U. S. Center for Disease Control) and could affect your ability to buy life and health insurance or even find a job in the future.

There is a "self test", advertised on the internet as "FDA approved". However, it is NOT a self test at all. It
requires you to take your own blood sample at home and then send it back to their lab for analysis. You must wait several days or a week or more to know the result, and if positive, could become a public record.

Accurate
The 1 MINUTE HIV SELF TEST tests for the presence of both HIV1 and HIV2 viruses. It has been thoroughly tested and approved for use in more than 30 countries around the world. It is highly accurate and reliable. Its specificity (99.7o/o) and sensitivity (99.3o/o) meet or exceed the sensitivity and specificity of currently FDA-approved and commercially available laboratory assays. A positive indication from this test however should be confirmed by an alternative confirmatory test for HIV, since a variety of factors could cause a non-specific reaction.

This has come up before on other message boards I read as well as the obvious path the discussion takes, it's effect on the SP biz.
Many of the clietnts were quite excited about the posibility of using this as a precaution in leiu of condoms.
Unfortunately, since it only tests for the antibody to HIV and not the virus itself, the test is not generally effective unless performed twice with at least a 6 week quarantine in between, because of the incubation period before the formation of antibodies.

These are big sellers in Thailand where they've been available for a while. Apparently you must follow the directions strictly, or you can get a false positive result.

Talked to a few expats who used these regularly, and no one uses them of condoms. Only as one more level of protection against this killer disease.instead .

my thoughts ...

i am all in favour of these 'at home kits'.

personally, i find the current process of waiting two weeks for lab results unbearable ... plus, at the clinic i get my hiv tests done, they call if you have a positive result only ~ and if you hear nothing, you are 'fine'. it only adds to the stress ...

Don't get me wrong. I'm in favour of the kits. I just think that there' s a lot of room of error, misuse or a false sense of security.
Personally I'd love to have a whole tray at home to do all my own gyn tests but who knows if that'll ever happen.

The kits have been kept out of the Canadian market by public health types, if you can believe that. There was discussion of the kits being available a few years ago, and there was immediately a big storm of protest from public health offices and such. The reasons they gave for opposing them made no sense, including simply that "pimps would test their girls". It really appeared that they were opposing them because they would lose their role as testers, though I would have expected a more reasoned approach from such people. The idea got shot down pretty quickly though. Eventually they will be unable to keep them out, I assume.

another concern ...

i read that another concern was that people should be tested in clinics so that they have access to counselling and resources if they test positive. how paternalistic!

other concerns: insurance companies using the tests to determine eligibility; and prisoners being tested without consent.
