just my opinion ..... find someone outside the industry and someone that writes that code compliant. Think light fast and standards...... all the sites i see for the industry look templated or the same........ i am not cheap nor do i have time but there are alot of people out there looking for the work..... check some of the user group boards interview and spend time chatting with them ask for samples or conceptual proofs and have them bid for the jobs......

I have seen dave's work and he can certainly do it. I was just giving my opinion on shopping for a designer.

In my opinion the designers recommended here are average when it comes to creative design. I have checked out their websites and even though they are more talented than I am, I am not crazy about their designs.

However the person who designed this site -> http://www.altbeauty.com/
is creative

I am not fond of flash websites but this one impressed me.

I could not find the designer's contact but you could contact altbeauty@gmail.com if interested.

...what are you aiming for?...something snazzy?...eye-catching?...something that leaves your visitor absolutely breathless?...what sites already come close to what you're looking for (if any)?...do you want something classic, elegant and stylish?...big or small?...hip and trendy?...

BBW Morgan recently had a good thread on SP websites:

https://terb.cc/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=80322&highlight=Morgan

The bottom line was "keep it simple" -- no flash

Of course, that does not mean ugly.

BTW: I love this: "Must be reasonable" -- You are a business. Your image is important. Don`t be afraid to spend a few bucks.

Ladies don`t like guys who haggle. Good web designers don`t either.

Damondean, that is quite rude and presumptuous imo!

I have seen some designers who charge as little as $99 and as much as $10,000+

somewhere in between is reasonable.

I was surfing craigslist, and saw ... http://toronto.craigslist.org/ers/65939533.html

Personally I appreciate lisaoftoronto.com's work.

Thanks Amber. I did not mean to be rude. Just pointing out a fact that everyone is looking for a bargain but mainly I was making the point that the consensus in the other post was heavily in favour of no flash and simplicity.

The stadard for IT work seems to be around $80-$85 an hour. There are no doubt people who charge $400 and are worth it. (Just like in other businesses.)

I agree on Lisa of Toronto's work. She posted some time back that she was giving it up because she had trouble collecting her fee from the ladies. I don't know whether she has gone back to doing it.

BBW Morgan also designs sites.

We will just have to await the new Friends site.

I better increase my rates.
Keeping it simple doesn't mean it will look crappy, I do agree that the importance to visitors of a web site is;

- to be able to get the information quickly
- be able to navigate easily
- not be bombarded with all kinds of animated banners

The importance to the client though is attracting visitors, having their web site found easily and increasing clients/business.

Thanks for all the help. I have found someone that I'm working with. There will be a new url but the KK site with still be up. I woke up one day with an idea and the domain name was available so I'm playing with that idea. As for KK site "if it ain't broke don't fix it"

I've been coming to the board for awhile and this is the first time I've seen some posts regarding design that have made me proud. Design is not all about the money, nor the aesthetic. It's about the concept. Any boner with an online ad for site design can do a page for $99, but what part of that came from his brain, versus his built in web-page building templates? If you can post a site online in 24hours, then you are not a designer. When you pay a designer, you pay for their brains - not computer skills. I bust my nuts every day trying to convince my clients that design is more than just someone with a computer.

I've seen many sites from different SPs here, and the majority all have similarities, with a few standouts. But would that make me pick one over the other? No. Content is just as important as visuals, but when I view all these sites the word 'cookie-cutter' comes to mind. It's unfortunate things are this way though because it makes it difficult for true designers to prove their worth. And in the business world, negotiation is key. In my case, a client gives a budget, and I honestly tell them what they can get for that budget. Bartering ensues. A amicable decision is agreed upon by all parties, or I suggest going elsewhere as it just isn't going to work out. The old adage applies: you get what you pay for.

My 2 cents.
