I'm going to be in Toronto this weekend. I'll probably be in the Miss. area. I'm looking for a good place to go for sushi. Does anyone have any suggestions?

{edit: suggestions for places serving Dimsum would also be appreciated}

How much of Sushi lover are you? It's not in Mississauga, but there is a place in Markham I love going to. Purely by ah...er coincidence, it's right beside an MP.

It's on 50 Lockridge just off 16 th Ave. 99 cents a piece and super fresh. Maybe not good for this trip, but if you find yourself in the area...now you've put me in the mood for some nice ebhi or taku...

The Constellation Hotel across from the airport has a nice quiet sushi restaurant at the front, though they appear to have stopped serving alchohol.

The International Plaza on Dixon just East of highway 27 also has a nice sushi restaurant, though it is somewhat busier.

How much of a sushi lover am I? Last summer I arranged an entire week long trip to Vancouver so I could spend a week sampling the sushi of their ever so many sushi bars. I was in Heaven. Next on the agenda is Japan itself.

I don't mind driving to other parts of Toronto for sushi. I think I've already illustrated how far I would go for good sushi.

Sorry, I should have said, the place I recommended is not really a sit down restaurant. There are a lot of oriental families in that neighbourhood and most of their business appears to be people stopping in to pick up dinner on the way home.

As an interesting aside, on a trip to Thailand recently I had a stop over in Narita airport. I saw travel ads there picturing men eating sushi on a boat. There was a variety of these ads. Curious, I asked the guy who was running the little internet lounge/hotel in the terminal about the ads. He explained that there are travel services for well to do Japanese business men that arrange weekend yachting trips. The men spend the weekend on a luxury yacht while smaller boats are sent out to fish for specific catches. The chef carves the fish, (preferably still alive) and serves the men on the spot. Now THAT'S fresh!

You really had to tell me that before dinner didn't you?
I guess I know where I'm going for dinner tonight now.
Don't think I can wait til I get to Toronto this weekend.

Lots of choice

Hi Heather,

All depends on how much you are willing to dish out. My favorite upscale sushi places are Hiro, Tempo and Nami and if i dont want to spend a lot of cash Sushi Bistro on Queen is good for the price.
Best dim sum in toronto at Metropolitan Hotel (Wai Lah Heen) but lots of places in scarborough 1/3 the price and not bad.

Two that I know of in downtown TO. (I mean I am ignoring the 100's of low-rent, over-the-counter, fast-food sushi joints). Nami is at 55 Adelaide St E, just east of Yonge near a nice nightclub called The Courthouse (It was a courthouse in the 19th century, still has the jail cells). The other is called Fune (foo-nay) on Simcoe at Adelaide in the Entertainment District, near all the clubs.

Nami is great. I haven't tried Fune but heard it was good.

Actually now that I think about it there is a third small one. It is immediately beside For Your Eyes Only on King street. (Now how did I now about that?) I haven't eaten there but a dancer told me it was good.

When you were in Van did you try Tsunami on Robson St.? I love the little parade of boats with food on them in the moat.

I'm not a sushi fan myself, but I'm told by sushi fanatics that Nami & Fune are the best in town. I've been to Nami before (had Tempura). Must admit the sushi looks interesting. They've got these 3 guys that make it fresh in front of you - there's a definite art to it! It's quite impressive to watch them work. At the front of the restaurant they have all the fresh stuff on ice so you get to see what it is you're eating before it's carefully crafted into tempting morsals.

For Dim Sum, in fact for Chinese food in general, Lai Wah Heen is the pinnacle and THE standard to beat. You simply will not find better Chinese food anywhere in North America. (Trust me on this.) As you can imagine, the prices at Lai Wah Heen are higher than normal, though not exorbitantly so. They've got the normal Dim Sum fare there at slightly higher than normal prices. But if you go there, treat yourself to some of their own creations; at $3.50 per piece it adds up pretty damn quick but it's worth it at least once in your life. For a more normal Dim Sum experience, across the street in the Colony hotel you'll find Bayview Gardens. It's down in the basement - don't let that scare you away. Once you're in the restaurant it's fine and the food is quite good.

Hi Heather:

Yes, the Sussex Centre sushi bar is very good, but it's been so long since I've been there the name escapes me.

The sushi bar at The International Plaza is called Ginko. I've been a fan of the chef since the mid 80's and his sushi and kitchen works are top rate. Highly recommended.

Edo and Sasaya, both in the Eglinton Village are both excellent but different reasons. The later is the more conservative of the two, but still just as good.

The sushi place at the Sussex Center is called Fuji-U. It is the best in the area. Absolutely recommended- rivals Nami.

There is another place close by, SE corner of 10 and Eglington. I forget the name...Awful place... food is mediocre, and the service has been awful all three times I tried it.

My favourite sushi place is at the corner of Victoria and Ricmond, Downtown Toronto. (Mr Sushi Man)
