Considering the acrimonious debates one reads between the "left" and the "right" on this forum it's kinda funny watching the news and seeing how chummy Bill Clinton and George Bush have become -- the tsunami was a wave of peace bringing the standard bearers of two ideologies together! (so maybe it was all worth it).

Seeing George 1 and 2, Laura and Bill Clinton at the Pope's funeral was like watching a trailer for Nat Lampoon's European Vacation 2. Made you kinda wish Barbara and Hillary could have come along as well ... The ladies could shop while Bill could take the Bushes to Pigalle (hopefully George 2 wouldn't snicker too much when he learned it used to be called Pig Alley by American GI's -- "know what they used to call this place, dad? Pig Alley"

"yes son, I know"

"Pig Alley, that's a pretty good one isn't it, dad"

"yeah, that's a good one alright"

"think I should tell, Laura?"

Next they'll be golfing at some pro am tourney (although apparently it takes Bill almost six hours to play a round -- he also takes a mulligan a hole -- while the Bushes generally breeze thru in three -- papa Bush still doesn't let his son drive the cart).

It just shows that the power elite is the power elite. They're not liberal in a true sense, they're not conservative in true sense. They're just politicians who belong to a club their supporters will never be allowed into.

Now that's no revelation to be sure, it's just kinda funny seeing them all together.

How about this perspective?
People can disagree on issues, but still can respect each other. Political disagreement doesn't have to translate in to personal dislike.
When it's all said and done we all belong to the same race.

You say that as though the "end of ideology" is a bad thing. If they're alike in most important respects, it's because the system ensures that nobody can ever reach the summits of power without having a certain baseline sense of responsibility and willingness to place the objective interests of the State over their own private ideological preferences. Furthermore, the very nature of the system forces them to make compromises, to negotiate, and so forth. What in America is termed the "power elite" (a term coined by a notoriously cranky, tin-foil hat wearing sociologist back in the '50s) would be regarded as the very model of responsible Statesmen anywhere else.

I said it was not a revelation.

And of course it is not a bad thing. I was simply making a point that there are a few posters here who think that there is a significant ideological difference between the leaders of the two major political parties in the US.

but thank's for the lecture and the others you are giving on an escort review board, it's good to know you tuition fees have not been wasted.

Actually, I would make the case that there are profound ideological differences, there are very different views of the world competing in Washington.

If you go beyond the leaders to the rank and file members of Congress, the difference is even more striking. How many conservative Democrats and liberal Republicans can you name? Not very many. But as recently as 30 years ago, both parties had significant conservative, moderate and liberal wings within each. You had very few votes decided strictly along party lines, as is often the case in the present. It was definitely a different time, when compared to the partisanship we see today.
