The Maple Leafs are far and away Toronto's premier professional sports franchise. But which, in terms of media exposure and fan interest, is no. 2, the Raptors or the Blue Jays?

As memories of the the Blue Jays successive World Series victories become distant, the youthful demographics favour the Raptors. Toronto television audiences are still much larger for the Blue Jays, yet over 60 percent of viewers are over 55 years of age. Both teams attract roughly the same number fans to the venue on game day (although the Raptors do sell out.)

Currently both teams employ reluctant 'almost' superstars in Vince Carter and Carlos Delgato. However, Carter may still emerge as the best athlete to play in Toronto colours.

What do you think?

Is this really debatable?

The Raptors are clearly the city's #2 team. The Jays enjoyed a wonderful span in the limelight and stole the city's attention during the two championships, but baseball is not winning ant popularity contests in the near future. You have to put a winning team out there to get Toronto fans to support you if their not wearing skates. The Raps will be a winning team, amazingly enough the Raps management made the commitment to providing a winner, it just didn't materialize.

Raps

My vote goes for the Raps..

Not so much for the team, raps losing streak was horrid, but for the sport.. I really think basketball and it's high scoring, fast paced game with more 'attitude' than baseball is going to be more successful in the future. Who wants (or can) sit down to watch 3.5 hours plus of baseball when they can watch 2 hours of basketball? Plus, basketball games, especially with raptor games I find, can change drastically in the last 6-7 minutes of the game - even with a 10+ point deficit/lead. Couple that with foul outs coming into play late in the game and it keeps it interesting right to the end.

I also think it benefits from better promotion and a much better playoff structure.

I disagree that the team needs to be a winner in order to have the publics support. Even though the Raptors were new, they still sold out (or close to it) the first several seasons, and continue to do so. It is a youthful game. The younger generation in the GTA will keep this team around for many years to come. As for baseball, I have never been a big fan of the sport in general, and lately the games has not helped me change my mind. The average game is about 3 hours. It is slow and methodical. I get bored by the 4th inning. (the season opener vs the BoSox was horrible) If I wanted slow and methodical I would watch chess. At least in chess there is an element of reason behind its slow game play.

Raptors to N.C?? If you are refering to the reports yesterday, read the original column that the writer wrote. It was a "Tounge and Cheek" comment about financials in Canada. There was NO merit behind his statement. Ever the author had to laugh about the "brew ha ha: it had started. Once again, gossip rules and facts fall to the way side!

I think you are wrong, with the exception of Hockey any Toronto team needs to be at least a five hundred team. We are talking about the city that booed our own first round draft pick, the same pick that went on to win rookie of the year.

"Even though the Raptors were new, they still sold out (or close to it) the first several seasons, and continue to do so"

The fans came to the games those first seasons because they were "new". It would just have been sad if we did not support a brand new team in a sport new to the city.

Don't forget the "fun" factor.

Leaf's are clearly #1 in this town. After that though many people go for entertainment purposes and not so much for the fan experience.

Going to a basketball game is plain fun. There's always something going on even during the breaks. Baseball on the other hand is a slow, traditional kind of event.

Then there's the arena experience. The Air Canada Centre is new and it's cool. The restaurants are actually quite good, the ushers are generally good looking, and the concession stand prices are not as exorbitant as you might expect them to be. Skydome on the other hand has really gone downhill in the past few years. I can't claim to be a fan of McDonalds, but I will say that I think they had higher quality offerings than what you can get from the current food stands. The restaurants at Skydome are not bad, but not as good as ACC.

So unless the Jays really start winning again (a possibility this year) there isn't much entertainment to offer especially compared to the Raptors.
